I always check the Coastal Plain (Summer Collegiate) League rosters to see if any Western players are participating. If possible, I try to go to a Lexington (Blowfish) or Florence (Red Wolves) game when the WCU guys are in town and show my support for Catamount baseball. Hook always puts out a press release about where Cats are playing Summer ball and I use that as a guide.
When I perused the Gastonia Grizzlies roster this Summer, I spotted Jacob Breakfield and it showed his college as WCU. I questioned that because I knew he did not play for Western in the Spring of 2016. I went to a game in Florence when Gastonia was in town. Got to talk with Jacob before the game and introduced myself as a big Catamount fan. He told me he had committed to come to Western from Catawba Valley Community College. (Same school from which we got Bryson Bowman a couple of years ago.) Really excited about becoming a Catamount!
Jacob is a character! Interesting background. Had a great JR baseball season at Bessemer City High. Missed his SR baseball season because of an injury suffered playing a Fall-Winter sport. After HS graduation, he decided not to go to college and went to work in his Dad's business. After a year, some of his old HS buddies coaxed him into going to a tryout that Catawba Valley Community College was having in the area. He went, the coaches liked what they saw and invited him to come to CVCC.
He was at CVCC for two years but only played one year because he had to have Tommy John surgery. But he said he found his niche at CVCC. He enjoys being a Closer. "You have to come in SLINGIN'..."
I did not get to see him pitch but enjoyed our conversation. Looking forward to seeing him "slingin'" in Cullowhee. (^_^)
