At this point in the season, we are not a good baseball team. Hopefully, we WILL BECOME a good team soon.
Walked in the winning run vs. ECU yesterday. On 4 pitches.
Had 3-1 lead going into the 8th inning and can't hold it. Brought in the same pitcher today in the 8th with the bases loaded and he walked in a run... on 4 pitches. A pitcher that we were counting on to be a front-line pitcher this year.
Bryan Sammons is the only pitcher that has shown any consistency so far in the first 9 games. If Sammons wins every start, we end up with .333 winning percentage unless someone else steps up and starts showing some consistency on the mound.
B. J. Nobles only gave up one run through 5 innings today but his pitch count was 109 and he was dodging bullets all day. App left 9 runners on base in those 5 innings. Michael Davis came in and gave us 2 good innings in the 6th and 7th. But the wheels ran off the wagon in the 8th.
Other teams are learning that if they can hang close with us into the 7th, 8th and 9th, that they have a good chance against our bullpen.

Can we salvage something from this weekend in Greenville? Will St. John's kick us in the teeth like they did down at Myrtle Beach? They surely will unless we get a great pitching job tomorrow... from someone other than Bryan Sammons...

They surely will unless we get a great pitching job tomorrow... from someone other than Bryan Sammons... If you remember my assessments after watching the Cats in Myrtle Beach. I said the Cat's season will rest with the 2nd tier pitching. There is a tremendous drop off in pitching after Sammons. This weekend the Cats will play 3 teams that give 11.7 Baseball Scholarships. Pitching depth is what gets hurt the most when you only have 6 Scholarships to give. Again 3 loses this weekend will demonstrate what consequences can occur when you underfund the WCU Baseball Cats. The 2nd tier pitching basically stinks & I do not think Bobby can do a whole lot about it because he does not have the Scholarships to build the depth he needs to compete against D1 competition.

I'd say that a new pitching coach has not helped the Catamounts.
Now wondering is baseball headed the way of basketball and football?

I'd say that a new pitching coach has not helped the Catamounts. Now wondering is baseball headed the way of basketball and football? I don't think it is totally the Pitching Coach. I think a lot of the Pitching problems are more about the talents or lack there of by the 2nd tier pitchers. From the 3 games I watched the Cats play in Myrtle Beach, the 2nd tier Pitchers can not successfully pitch against good D1 Schools like Clemson, East Carolina or St. John's. When it comes to WCU Baseball, I try not to criticize the coaches as much as I do in Football or Basketball. However, I did complain about Bobby's pitching decisions in the Clemson Game & the ECU Game. However, Baseball is unlike Football & Basketball, Baseball gives about 1/2 the number of scholarships allowed by the NCAA but Football & Basketball give the maximum allowed scholarships by the NCAA. Where the lack of scholarships show up is when we play good D1 Teams & the Midweek Games. I'm am still surprised how well the Baseball Program has performed over the years with the scholarships albatross hanging around its neck.

I don't think the losses in baseball have anything do to with Moranda or his staff. On paper, Moranda has a very good staff and he has shown me over the years that he can coach. The problem with baseball at Western Carolina is poor leadership from our Chancellors and ADs over the past 40 years. Instead of trying to fix it, the current regime has made it worse by holding funding levels from the university at the same level as 4 or 5 years ago. The only increase in funding has come from the Catamount Club giving and they do appreciate it but funding from the administration has stayed stagnant or gone down. You are now seeing the results in Football, Mens and Women's basketball and now probably baseball. I know that funding at a state level has been cut over the years but don't keep lying to the alumni and supporters of WCU. Why did Chancellor Belcher say that athletics and football is the front porch of our university and not really believe that? That is the definition of a lie because his actions are different than what he says. It is OK though, because most Western supporters realize what has been going on now and are used to it. We should probably just move down to D2 if we are going to fund the programs at a D2 level.

Catamount Baseball Drops LeClair Classic Finale to St. John's, 9-1
Western Carolina is the only team in the tournament to NOT win a single game. I had hopes the Cats with Bats would be able to show their stuff this year in the LeClair Tournament.
They did show their lack of stuff.

Catamount Baseball Drops LeClair Classic Finale to St. John's, 9-1 Western Carolina is the only team in the tournament to NOT win a single game. I had hopes the Cats with Bats would be able to show their stuff this year in the LeClair Tournament. They did show their lack of stuff. It appears the starting pitcher for the Cats pitched a decent game against a top 20 team. He gave up 4 earned runs in 8 innings of work. The ninth inning pitchers gave up 5 runs. Bobby has no relief pitchers that can successfully pitch against good D1 teams. We should get the same results on Monday against NC State. The starting pitchers are going to have to get their pitch counts down & throw complete games. The Relief Pitchers are not pitchers, they are a bunch of throwers. As far as the offense is concerned, in baseball you run into pitchers that throw an outstanding game & the lack of hitting today was the result. Good pitching normally beats good hitting. This could be a long season for the Cats if the second line of pitchers do not get their act together. Again, this all reflects on the lack of Baseball Scholarships.

Tristan Baker deserved a better fate than he got today. We only got two hits off St. John's pitching.
Baker scattered 8 hits pretty well over 8 innings and only gave up 4 runs. I believe we will win about 70% of the time if our opponent scores only 4 runs.
Their pitching had 9 K's and only 3 BB's. We only had one K and issued 5 walks.
It will take a near-miracle to keep us from getting our butts kicked in Raleigh tomorrow.
