Lenoir-Rhyne University officials announced today that Danny Williamson has accepted the position of Head Coach for both Men's and Women's Cross Country and Track and Field. Williamson comes to Lenoir-Rhyne after an impressive 30-year career as Head Men's and Women's Cross Country and Track and Field Coach at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C., from 1987 to 2016. Williamson retired from WCU in July of 2016 after nearly 30 years of coaching. Shortly after retiring, he was invited to serve as the Head Cross Country and Track & Field Coach for Cherokee High School in Cherokee, N.C., this past school year. Williamson also served as a college liaison and athletic support specialist for the high school. www.citizen-times.com/story/sports/high-school/hshuddle/2017/06/29/williamson-coach-lenoir-rhyne-track/438463001/

I kind of thought something like this might happen. Coach Williamson should have been compensated much better, more scholarships, and some facilities for T&F at the track. Had WCU done these things, coach would still be a WCU turning out championships.

Who can blame him? He is an alum and bled purple and gold for 40 years but his sport was never given any resources. Just like all the other sports teams at Western where athletics is not a priority. Short sided thinking and no athletic leadership for 30 years will eventually result in this. We will see if 4 years from now we are still winning track championships. We are getting what the administration deserves. Sad that we have to deal with such poor leadership from the administration and have their lack of commitment affect our wonderful university. How old is Belcher? How much longer do we have to deal with this....? I know he has to retire at 65. Thank God!

I ran for Coach in the early to mid 2000's. Yes, we weren't given many resources. But as I remember, that was a source of pride for us. And it was because Coach never once complained about what we didn't have and instead used it as a way to motivate us. It will be interesting to see if Coach McDaniel can do the same job recruiting in the state that Coach Williamson did. When it is truly "his" program in 3-4 years, we will know if the right decision was made. I know of 3 very distinguished coaches who are alums who were not given the time of day for this job. My support is with Coach McDaniel, but my loyalty will be with Coach Williamson

I concur. I ran for Coach the first year he got the job. The guy can take average athletes with no resources and win championships, a lot of them. Whatever happened here was not what should have happened. He will win multiple championships at Lenoir Rhyne and we will see where the program is in four years, I am guessing back where we were when Coach Millwood was here.
