What a day in Catamount athletics. The softball team loses their first game in the SoCon tournament, and the baseball team, not to be outdone, loses to Clemson. Ahhhhhhhhh..... ain't it great to be a Catamount fan?

I have always been tolerant of Clemson because of Coach Leg and the fact that I live in the upstate. I bleed purple, but sometimes pee orange.
Now that I am back to the house, I can say I enjoyed the game. Believe it or not, I actually think Coach Moranda did some good things over this week:
1. He gave a sub a chance to hit and be in the lineup for 4 or 5 straight games rather than he play a game and then gets a garbage bat in the 9th and don't hit again for a week. Good job Bob (even if it didn't work out, it was right thing)
2. He had pitchers warming up BEFORE they got in trouble. Maybe Coach Bob listening to his pitching coach. Good job Bob.
WHAT COACH SHOULD DO, BUT WON'T:
1. Spencer Holcomb is a big stud. Kid has a chance to get drafted. Rest him Coach! Rest him. He can help us big in the tournament and burning him out before that time will hurt the team and his chances at getting drafted.
2. DH/Subs -- Playing the kid 4 or 5 games gave us an idea of what he can do right now. You hadn't done that this season. Unfortunately, the kid's average dropped even more and it is time to move to that next guy, giving him the same opportunity. Players like Capell, Fricks, Parks, Wilder, etc.... They ain't been in 2 straight games, let alone 4 or 5. Give them the consistent ABs and see how they do. If that fails like this one did, move to the next guy. Your star will emerge that can help you in the tournament.
3. Pitch some of the kids that haven't pitched in over a month (Davis, Mitschele, etc...). We are going to need all the pitchin we got in the tournament. They need some innings and fast.
4. Shave.
5. If you got somebody in the lineup batting below .200, probably need to look down the bench for a temporary replacement until they get right.
That's all I got and it ain't near as bad as you thought.

The problem all year has been at the plate... weak hitting... and all the stuff associated with that...
Just looked at the SoCon stats as of yesterday (5/8/18). We are at or near the bottom in every offensive category.
Team Batting Average - .261. Only one other team lower. Samford is .260. Team Home Runs - 25. Only The Citadel has fewer. On base percentage - .332. Lowest in the league. K's per game - 8.4. Only Furman and VMI is higher. Team BB's received - 131. Lowest in the league. Team runs scored - 200. Lowest in the league. Team hits - 402. Lowest in the league. Grounded into DP - 32. Only Furman has had more.

Until the brilliant Coach Mo figures out, and it has been 46 games now, that you don't keep sending guys to the plate game after game after game that's batting right at 200 or below I doubt you will ever win games. Especially close ones. We played a very good team close. The outfield 0-13. Absolutely No production again. The losses keep coming. I would say the Junior College transfer, that had proven success at the college level , should be playing but the brilliant Coach Mo removed him from the team for being negative. Even we are negative can you imagine having to sit and watch the guys playing before bat 100 while the team goes 6-40 and not be negative. If anyone needs to be removed I know whom I would remove. If anyone thinks this program doesn't need a change and now I certainly would like to know why.

why isn't Luke Robinson playing? Luke is not playing due to a fracture in his hand from where he got hit at VMI. Possible return at tournament but that is questionable at best.

I am encouraged moving toward the tournament. While I don't always agree (hardly ever) with the Cat in the hat, I do like green eggs and ham. Cat in the hat may be on to something.
Coach Moranda was more on top of the pitching this past week and it showed. I couldn't make it to the Furman series, but listening to the broadcast, there were reports of pitchers warming in the bullpen at the proper times -- not when it was already too late. That was something we haven't heard all year. Great efforts by all of the pitching the past week!
Coach Moranda did give one of the kids some consistent opportunities (look at the box score) by allowing him to DH over over a series of games. He made good contact a few times (3 for hits) but wasn't very successful, batting only .175 or so. I applaud Coach Moranda for giving the kid a decent chance -- not a sprinkling of "garbage" at bats in the late innings. My guess is that Coach Moranda will give the next guy the same chances with some consistent ABs heading into the tournament.
I don't know about shaving. I thought Coach Moranda looked pretty good on ESPN. I'm superstitious, so I would probably keep the beard.
On Spencer Holcomb, Cat in the hat is also right. While Coach Moranda didn't rest Danny (a previous catcher for those that don't know) a bunch, he did a few times down the stretch. My guess is he will do the same, giving the youngster Cappell some opportunities.
I also think that Coach Moranda is going to try Baker in the OF to play for whichever one is struggling during practice. It is a weak spot for us right now. I thought he came to us as a 2-way player anyway.
I am encouraged. If we keep a handle on the pitching, let Baker play some outfield, rest Holcomb, and give a bench guy or two the same opportunity he gave the juco kid and we will be ready for the tourney.

Sorry to hear that because he has been one of the better hitters in WCU’s lineup. If WCU is to do anything in the Tourney, we need his bat.
