In addition, the only coach on WCU's football staff that I think that may have the potential to leave at this time and again (this is just potentially) not saying he will either is Tripp Weaver and that is because of his connections to ECU and also to Mike Houston, as not only was he on Houston's JMU staff, but he played for Houston at T.C. Roberson. But at the same time he is pretty close to John Wiley as well. So he could just as well stay at WCU too. I just have heard that ECU/Houston has reached out to him, but that is all I have heard.

Don't act like someone on this board made it up just to hurt Speir. It came from a usually reliable source, FootballScoop.com I don't believe the story at all, I think Speir is pretty direct and honest guy, but even if he did, maybe he did it as a courtesy interview just to see, or for his son or for whoever. I know coaches and even regular joe workers who may interview NOT to take a new job but sometimes for leverage for better position or pay. I did this once and they did not want to lose me (and I was really not going anywhere) but I got a better position and pay just so I would be more happy and stay. Not back to FootballScoop, I would love to know where they got their info from but they reported a false story just last week. So here I go let me bring up something ECU related and offend a few but the point is to point out Footballscoop is not purely credible but last week, Footballscoop posted the article "Mike Houston to be next Charlotte Coach" In the article it mentioned these statements "James Madison head coach Mike Houston will take the same position at Charlotte." Also, "At Charlotte, Houston will take over one of the best high-ceiling young programs in the Group of 5. The 49ers, who played their first season in 2013, play in the 5-year-old, on-campus Richardson Stadium and are located in one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the country with a hundreds of recruits in a 300-mile radius from Charlotte, stretching down to Atlanta and up into Virginia." "Houston takes over for Brad Lambert, who was Charlotte’s only head coach until he was let go on Nov. 18. Charlotte is 12-36 overall and 8-24 in conference play since joining Conference USA in 2015, though the 49ers posted their best season to date in 2018, going 5-7 overall and 4-4 in C-USA play." I think that article proved to be 100% completely false!!!! The only thing Houston did was verbally speak to the AD at UNCC and said he had interest.footballscoop.com/news/report-mike-houston-next-charlotte-coach/You are wrong about Houston only "verbally speaking to the AD", he was in fact offered the job at Charlotte. Had the ECU AD not contacted him prior to his signing a contract with Charlotte, he would be the Charlotte HC right now, as he had accepted the position but not signed a contract. So, FootballScoop was not in error in their reporting, ECU just stole a coach out from under Charlotte's nose.

When WCU hired Spiers, App fans were glad to see him go. With his record at WCU an interview in BOONE would be a waste of gas and time.

Houston told Charlotte he was not accepting the position until he looked at other offers from other schools and then UNCC pulled the offer.

So, FootballScoop was not in error in their reporting, ECU just stole a coach out from under Charlotte's nose. Footballscoop was in error of saying Houston was going to be the next UNCC football coach as if it was a done deal, a contract had been signed, sealed, delivered and made it sound like an announcement was going to be made. So they were wrong in reporting that instead of the fact the he was only "verbally offered" the position. So they are not 100 creditible as they took a story and ran with it without mentioning that Houston is in talks with UNCC which would have been more accurate. But ECU stealing Houston away, my joke to that is "that's what Pirates do they steal the treasure lol." Got to live up to the name. But seriously, Dave Hart Jr and Jon Gilbert had been in talks with Houston through his reps and back channels before the UNCC statement came out. But they had not fired Scottie Mo yet and it is said that Houston wanted to coach at ECU and let his statement slip out about interest "only" in UNCC to notify ECU to hurry up and fire Mo and hire him before he settled for the UNCC job. In all essence, Houston used UNCC which I admit I think is funny. But back to Speir, I tend to believe Speir but regardless whether he interviewed there or not App St is a place he had some history so he may have interviewed as a courtesy only or he may not have interviewed at all. I am not upset either way because he isn't going anywhere. But when schools start to show interest in a coach that usually indicates the coach is doing something right. All I am saying is I dont believe everything I read. To me Footballscoop is just like SB Nation. Sometimes their right sometimes their wrong.

this is a true Report, footballscoop.com reports that speir, NC state online coach, as well as interim head coach Mark Ivey. All have experience in Boone. Coach’s at the FCS level only view there school as a steppingstone to get to their greater achievements. I can tell you with 100% certainty he has not interviewed and is not planning on interviewing. It was a false report and everyone except football scoop has recanted after tethering facts from the the athletic dept. Unless your coach speir himself how can you be 100% certain he has not interviewed for the job. Use your brain it just makes sense. App state job for Xx amount of money versus western for Xx amount. App state will pay more and it’s the place he started and he has build up himself enough to interview for the job. FCS head coach’s look for greener pastures that’s part of the job. The time of loyalty to a program is no more.

This thread is inane. What's the point? It's an open market, why wouldn't one look for better opportunity - especially while employed rather than unemployed? Half the folks on this blog want Speir gone, but oh, please not to App State. We just need to sit on the piano and listen to the music. It will reach conclusion at some point.

... Half the folks on this blog want Speir gone, but oh, please not to App State. Something I get a chuckle out of is these folks. They'll rail all day long about how he wasn't qualified, is too loyal to his friends on the staff, doesn't have the gumption to manage his staff, yada yada yada. Good grief, these folks sure act like anything short of a coach who would have delivered repeated national championships and committed to WCU for life, was unacceptable. I guess taking a program from an avg of 2-9 (1-7) the previous 7 seasons to 4-7 (3-5) for his 7 seasons means he sucks enormously. (Don't forget his first two seasons were all about building a program from the ground up. No small task given how bad it was at that time.)

Well - at least we aren't on the Auburn comment board... As SB Nation said about the Purdue / Auburn bowl game, "One school is hoping to keep their coach while the other school is hoping theirs will leave."

When WCU hired Spiers, App fans were glad to see him go. With his record at WCU an interview in BOONE would be a waste of gas and time. That is not how I remember it, when he was hired, a number of App fans and donors, my former boss (who is living life at the beach in retirement now) was very upset App was losing him and many other Appy fans were upset too.
