I for one am extremely happy that we have lost no coaches this year and all of our assistant coaches are coming back. We have one of the strongest if not the strongest coaching staffs in the Southern Conference. At our level, staff retention is always a problem because a coach can leave for a bigger school and more money. In years past, we have lost several good coaches because we could not afford to keep them. It is good to have a year with no turnover in staff. That helps with recruiting and continuity. I hope Coach Speir is our coach for as long as he wants to coach. We had one of the worst defenses in the entire FCS last season, and you say we have the strongest coaching staffs in the SoCon? These two things don't make sense to me, or are you just blaming the players for their poor performance? Guess it had nothing to do with the defensive coaching staff? We also played allot of freshmen last year and had allot of players graduate from the defensive side of the ball the year before. Also, this was only Coach Wileys 2nd year in Cullowhee. He has had about one recruiting class where he has gotten the kind of players he wants for his defense. He started too late his first year to really have an impact on recruiting. The man was the defensive coordinator at App when they won 3 national championships and App had some outstanding defenses back then. Are you saying that what he did at App was a fluke and he had to come to Western for us to discover he is a bad coach? Also, I am not blaming the players for being young.

I hope Coach Speir is our coach for as long as he wants to coach. I think our assistant coach salaries now are competitive with all the other SoCon schools. I think that prior to the Speir administration we did lose coaches for that reason, especially under Briggs. Coaches will always leave for advancement opportunities and sometimes just for a higher profile school. Our problem could be the reverse, we have some that need to leave. Agree with what you are saying about coaches leaving for better pay or higher profile job. The problem is that we might now pay competitive with what the SoCon pays, but the Sunbelt and CUSA, etc. pay better so you are exactly right in my opinion. I don't know if we have some coaches that should leave. I do know that if you look at the background of the coaches I know about, they come from winning traditions. That in itself means nothing, but it is like buying a stock. If a stock has done well in the past, that is about all you can go on when determining to buy or not buy that stock.
