Western Carolina is in a neck and neck race for the overall worse athletic program in the SoCon. Other than track and field, men's athletics has been a dumpster fire, from football in the fall to baseball in the summer, including all the other men's sports. Change My mind.

Who are we neck and neck with? The other usual bottom feeder, VMI of course.

Just the facts on the Men's sports we participate in: Sport | Rank
| Note | Football | 8th | Out of 9 teams
| Basketball | Tied for 8th
| Tied for last - 3 of the 10 teams were 4-14
| Baseball
| 7th
| Current standing for this season to date out of 9 teams
| Cross Country
| 6th | Out of 10 teams
| Golf | 7th | Out of 8 teams (2018), but our top golfer tied for 2nd
| T&F | 1st
| Out of 8 teams for both Indoor (this year) and Outdoor (last year)
|
So we are at or near the bottom in several, but we have some company and are not last or next to last in all sports - just several :-). Both VMI and Citadel are behind us in the standings in baseball (if we beat Furman the next 2 games we would be ahead of them). Both VMI and Citadel finished tied with us in basketball. We won championships again in T&F, and 4 teams finished behind us in Cross Country.
None of those finishes are where any of us want to be other than T&F. WCU is always going to finish behind in many of the year-long "cups" and overall standings because those are based on all sports and we don't participate in a number of them. On soconsports.com, they track 12 total sports for men and WCU only participates in 7 (T&F indoor and T&F outdoor are considered 2 as there are championships for both).
I'd certainly agree the overall performance is well below average.

If, and this is only if, WCU were looking for another conference, tell me a conference that would be interested in bringing in WCU.
my thoughts:
maybe: Big South, only because they will take anyone Pioneer, only if we dropped scholarships Mid-East Athletic - only if Savannah State leaves
probably not: OVC
Certainly not: CAA Football Missouri Valley Southland Patriot League

The sad thing about those ranking are they are not unusual. Those ranking, or worse is the norm for WCU athletics.

The baseball team is doing everything it can to equal last season's last place, regular season finish.
