Not surprised at all. He started his downfall last season when he wanted more money & sat out of Spring Training. His actions last year could cost him his Major League Career.

He needs to sign on with someone next season to get his 10th year of MLB service...which would set him up for a great pension package. You are right...sitting out spring training last season was the beginning of his downfall, plus I'm not sure he has the same stuff after surgery.

There is way too much to read in here, but Greg is going to be ok even if he is done: www.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/bhb/eng/mlb-0f0-pension-print.pdfIf I am reading that correctly, if he retired now he could start collecting $4221/month in fixed benefits at age 45 ($4690 if he had 10 seasons). If he waited to “normal” early retirement age of 62 that would be $13050/month ($14500 if he had 10 years). They also have a variable number that obviously can fluctuate, but they estimate that to be with 9 years $742/month at age 45 up to $2700/month at age 62. So right now, he could retire and start collecting over $5400/month at age 45 for life. That number grows to nearly $6700/month at age 50, and $15750 if he waited until age 62. The 10 years make it better and is the max (you don’t go higher after 10), but he already has earned healthcare and what I would consider a pretty healthy retirement plan. In fact, in baseball you earn some benefits like healthcare after the first day you are on an active roster, and some retirement money after 43 days on an active roster (1/4th of a season).

Greg was signed by the Washington Nationals but to a minor league contract. Has been assigned to the AA Harrisburg (PA) Senators in the Eastern League.
Has pitched in one game so far. One inning. No runs; no hits; no K's and 1 BB.
His manager at Harrisburg is Matt Lecroy who played at Clemson under Jack Leggett and went on to have a decent major league career behind the plate. Native of Belton, SC.

Do you think it is a coincidence that the Nationals signed Greg Holland and his first pitching coach at WCU was current Nationals pitching coach Paul Menhart? I think its great that Menzy is giving Holland a chance to work out his mechanical issues on the AA level. Hope he makes it back to The Show before the end of the season and gets a chance to get that 10th year of MLB service.
