Looking at the remaining schedule, there is no one left that this team can not beat. But, they have to play better than today to do that.

The Cats got beat by a more physical and mature football team today. Furman controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Would having Dez healthy made a difference? Maybe? But Cole had pressure on him on numerous occasions, and we all but abandoned the run from the opening series.
Furman has experience on their side. A lot of could of/should ofs, but that busted play with 1:20 left in the 4th could have played out differently. I just knew we were going to get that big stop, and go win the game with no time remaining. However, it wasn't meant to be.
How will we respond to a tough loss? That will be the tell-tell. If we bounce back strong and beat Mercer next week, we can go 7-1 in conference and 9-2 overall, which positions us great for the playoffs. If we struggle next week.....who knows

A 100% healthy Dez would have no doubt made a difference. We were one dimensional from the start. Would we have won - I am not saying that. But I think he would have helped with the pressure Cole saw and he could have certainly given us a better chance early on in maybe converting some of those drives where we ended with failed 4th down tries.
I thought we came out a little too jacked-up and were not ready especially on D to start with. Both teams settled in and played better defense in the 2nd half. Furman just controlled the game at the line and that made the difference.
Of note we were also down a starting O-lineman, and that hurt, too.
Next week is huge. Mercer has had our number and we laid a serious egg last year. So we better come out thinking we need to prove something. We need to finish 9-2 to feel comfortable about a playoff bid.

Man, I don’t know about anyone else, but I just cannot get it out of my head how furious I am at how bad the school screwed up the feed for television today. maybe it’s the fact that I’ve been traveling for two days trying to get home running from a hurricane in Cabo San Lucas, had to go to Mexico City and missed flights there and spent the night, and was up at 3am this morning to go to the airport and I’m absolutely worn out and all I wanted to do was sit and watch the game today, but man we sure screwed it up. Maybe tomorrow will be better 🤣🤣
Next week they better bring their A game

So after getting home from down the mountain here are a few of my game hot takes .
1. The Furman coaches out coached us. We had two weeks to prepare and it did not show. I know Reid got hurt early. But the run game left when he did so we became 1-D
2. Both sides of the ball looked terrible. Offense could not run. See above comments. Could not get the passing game going well. They passed ok but not well. The INT Cole threw in the end zone was all on him trying to do too much. Cole in his defense had pressure in his face all game long. The defense looked horrible just like I stated I was concerned about when I picked Furman to win in the pickem this week. We never stopped the run today. Never. The RBs ran all day. Huff ran all day. They took whatever they wanted. Huff even though not known as a good passer looked like great against our secondary. I think our defense has been figured out on film. They used reverses and flea fickers against our over aggressive defense.
3. The refs missed so many holding calls against Furman
4. Furman flopped as usual through the game.
5. If we win out we still will be ranked and make the playoffs but our road in the playoffs just much harder
6. We will have to wait till next year to win the SoCon. Furman has a very slim chance to drop one conference game but they will not lose two

Man, I don’t know about anyone else, but I just cannot get it out of my head how furious I am at how bad the school screwed up the feed for television today. I was at the game and they made several announcements about the ESPN feed, they said whatever the problem was, it was not at Cullowhee, but in the ESPN system, so there was nothing they could do to fix it. I have no idea how factual that is, but that's what our new Hall of Fame announcer, Gary Ayers said (I don't think he'd have a reason to lie about it, since he's on the radio).

IMO, the offense scored enough points to win, our problem is what it always is - defense. While we formerly were not able to stop the run, we can now do a reasonable job there, but our pass defense lets us down repeatedly, which also killed us in the Chatty game.
The Furman QB picked us apart, and with that beast of a running back Roberto providing enough of a rushing game to keep the defense out of sink, for the passing game. Their strategy worked perfectly.

Thank you for posting that. It does not matter at this point, but my only thought was that the school provides the feed to ESPN but maybe that’s not entirely true. It’s obviously a non-issue at this point, I was just furious at the time and well, guess I am still upset about it. I remember the days if we weren’t at the game having to listen to it on the radio or watch it on an iPad or something like that before ESPN plus was around…..damn small school problems! Gary is the man and yes, he he’d have no reason to lie. 100% class act!
