I think we need to hang 50 on them honestly and hold them to 2 TD's or less to prove a point 04, trust me WCU is not going to hang 50 on anybody with Desmond out of the lineup until the end of the regular season. If you do not have a balanced offense, you are not going to win games against the top tier teams in the SoCon. I hate to see a season end like this with so many people on here having such great hopes for this team this season. You just can’t expect great things out of this team when you have a terrible secondary on defense. If this team somehow wins the remaining games and Reid is healthy for the playoffs, that will be a game changer for me. Our bigger worry isn't Reid, it's the offensive line. Until the Furman game they had DOMINATED opponent defensive lines. They weren't dominant at all this past Saturday and toss in the constant LB blitzing and Cole was hurried a ton. I also felt we were not very creative with the play calling, a bit bland and almost a bit predictable.

I also felt we were not very creative with the play calling, a bit bland and almost a bit predictable. Coach Bell said in the post game interview that we were down 2 starters on the Oline against Furman and they had to move people to the opposite side of the line and from guard to tackle and tackle to guard. I am not making excuses but if we can get healthy on the Oline, our Oline will be fine. I do think with a healthy line and a healthy Desmond, we would have scored more than 17 points against Furman but they beat us with who we have healthy so no excuses. Also, I know that everyone has been saying how bad the defense is, but we basically held Furman to 23 points before that busted play at the end of the game which would not have happened if we were able to score on more of our possessions. Holding Furman to 23 points for most of the game should have been enough to win with a healthy Oline and healthy Desmond. Not having Desmond and a depleted line made us one dimensional at best. I am not saying that Furman did not beat us, but if we did not have these key injuries, we would have faired much better.

Yeah - we were down more than Reid. Mercer has a good defense, but Furman has the best defense we will see all season (maybe including Arkansas). All the things mentioned will be important - more balance, attempts to take advantage if Mercer does a lot of blitzing to get our WRs and TEs passes in the middle of the field and in the seams, and the Bells doing what they usually are good at - more offensive creativity. Mercer has 2 outstanding WRs, but I do not think their run game or their QB matches up to what UTC can do, and I know it doesn't match up to what Furman can do. So make Mercer have to throw the ball a lot, keep their WRs in front of us, and basically take a page out of what the Mocs did to them 2 weeks ago (which is similar to what FU just did to us).
Furman is a top-3 FCS football team, so I continue to not understand why many on here think we are all of the sudden garbage because we lost to the best FCS team we are going to play all season.

Some folks are looking for a reason to be negative. Also, I think some folks don’t understand that when you play tougher competition, every play does not always go for a gain and on defense, you may not stop them every play. I was not aware that we had all the injuries that we had. Not having Desmond healthy is huge. You can’t pin your ears back and blitz like Furman did when a back like Desmond is in the game because he will make you pay if you blitz the LBs or safeties and run right by them. We were in that game to the end and we were pretty much one dimensional the entire game. If we had scored when Cole threw that interception on the goal line, we would have probably won the game, but that changed everything. We would have been up 21-20 and Furman kicked a field goal after the interception making it a 9 point game, instead of a 2 point game. We would have had about 4 minutes left in the game and could have gone down and kicked a field goal. We did not get stomped and we were in the game in the 4th quarter against the number 3 team in the country. Furman has 40 seniors on their team and we are still very young. We played a good game against a good team and got beat.

I have watched some pretty large stretches of NCCU games this year. IMO Furman, WCU, and UTC would beat them like a drum. I’d say Mercer and Samford may very well be favored against them.
