Silver lining thought of the day. With the loss to Furman, are we keeping Kerwin in the Whee in 2024? lol. If Kerwin wins 9 games and gets us in the playoffs for the first time in 40 years, I say we build a statue of him and give him a ten year extension. Before someone says, I am crazy, please know that I am kidding about the specifics but yes we should keep him for 2024 and for as long as he wants to stay in my opinion. I have seen the alternatives to Kerwin in our past coaches and he is the best we have had hands down.

You are not crazy but Kerwin Bell will leave down the road and it will be his choice....A couple of factors that could play into it is his age and he might want to build a solid program at Western to hand off to Cade....My question is are we willing to match what other schools might throw at him....For information only Mike Houston at East Carolina makes a 1.4 million base.....Just saying!!!!

i don't think we could ever pay a coach 1.4 million even if we wanted to. I mean we are struggling to fund raise 30 million to fix our way out of age facilities

I think it really depends on what Kerwin's ambitions or goals are. He is already wealthy so is he chasing more money nearing 60 or more of a legacy? He stays here and I hate to compare but he could be the next long term FCS coach that became a legion synonmous with taking WCU to places it has never acheived. At close to 60 and being from Florida he may love the mountains and cool weather as its a change from the hot humid weather he has always been to. A close to 60 he may looking for a consistent place to win build into a dynasty and retire.
If he is chasing the money, then we can offer more but we probably can not compete with many FBS schools but who calls, a program that is in bad shape hoping he can turn their fortunes or an already quality program. As he is near 60 and never been an HC the big P5 schools wont call him to be their HC (they may offer him an OC job for more though) but only Florida do I think he might consider that for and I am not sure he would give up being an HC to be an OC. Now G5s will call and will offer more and it will be up to him does he want to start all over again? Some G5 schools may have more money but when compared to WCU and other FCS programs are a careee destroying dumpster fire.
He stayed at Jacksonville U for I think 8 or 9 seasons. So it may not be about money to him, maybe he wants to end his coaching career here?
Kade though may take an opportunity to go after more money or build his resume as he is still young and probably has big ambitions (and I do not blame him if he does). If Kerwin is still here and Kade goes somewhere else for more experience/money, he probably can come back here anytime or take over HC here. For some reason if Kade leaves I think Kerwin takes over OC duties.

Like a lot of these conversations (transfer portal, conference realignment, etc.) it takes two to tango. Kerwin Bell isn't like most young players who are liable to bolt for anything or coaches who chase money - I believe he would be very picky about taking another head coaching job. At the same time, the kinds of jobs that he would be interested in would require somebody to also be interested in taking on a guy who is older and has not proven himself at the FBS level. Bell's coaching career:
1990: GA at Florida under Spurrier for one year and then he went back to playing (then a long break) 2001: Co-offensive coordinator for the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL as a player 2002 - 2006: started the program as head coach at Trinity Catholic High School in Ocala, FL (state champs in 2005 and lost final in 2006) 2007 - 2015: Head coach at Jacksonville University where he went 66-35 (10-1 in 2010 and won 9 games 2 other times) 2016 - 2018: Head coach at D2 Valdosta St where he went 27-7 including a National Championship in 2018 (14-0) 2019: Offensive coordinator for USF (team went 4-8 and the entire staff was replaced) 2021 - present: WCU where he is 15-14
Bell is 58 years old, and my guess is he would probably prefer to settle in somewhere. I also think he wants to be a winner. And on top of all of that, as also mentioned before I would think being somewhere with Kade as his OC is a draw to keep possibly both of them here (or wherever they coach). I could see Kerwin wanting to build a solid program and turn the keys over to Kade. Kade is probably the one who will get options coming his way soon.

I know his wife loves the area so that is a huge factor for a coach and where he wants to be plus being able to coach along side his son and be able to see his grand daughter every day is huge for him. We have the opposite problem with our men's basketball coach who loves the area and his team but his wife hates the area so that will help, along with a winning program, for him to look else where sooner rather that later
