Speaking of defense, I was sitting with a huge Catamount fan today. He had a great comment when we had Wofford 3rd & long today. "Oh great. Now they have to pass."

A win is better than a loss, but no real way to put much spin on that performance. Uninspired, undisciplined, and lucky to escape Spartanburg against a not very good football team. We better do some soul-searching if we expect to beat either ETSU or VMI. Maybe we will be healthier, but no matter who is out there we have to start playing and coaching smarter.

SOCON is just a slobber knocker conference this year. Check the other scores. Furman barely beats UTC just like WCU did. Mercer beats Citadel by less of a margin than WCU did. Crazy year. UTC only beat Woffy by 10, but WCU beat UTC at their place. So it goes. WCU fans should have known all along this year should be and would be a tough year to have 6+ wins, but yet we got greedy in our mindset. Then, we lose some key players due to injury and still yet, we expect all the cylinders to be firing perfectly just like always. Get real folks. WCU is still a work in progress. Catman72 says, "So you want to go to the playoffs and be embarrassed on a national level?" As a WCU alumnus, twice fold, and western NC native, my answer to that question is a resounding "YES, would be SO HAPPY if WCU did so!" I, as a WCU fan would be in a better position than ECU fans, Wake fans, (Oh my gosh) maybe ASU and NC State fans this year. Nice change over last year any many prior. So go ahead and poo poo away the the 2023 season all you want Catman and others, I'm just happy we went 1-0 this week. On to the next.
Ok, now that's off my chest. Not real happy with the way our team played today. We suck. I hope we lose to ETSU and VMI because, well, just because. WCU's play on the field today just makes me so mad that I can't imagine myself being happy about another win no matter how the team wins, good, bad, or ugly.
...I hope you all pick up on sarcasm in the last paragraph, because I laid it on pretty thick.
GO CATS!! Hang in there. Keep winning, don't care how good it looks or how bad it looks.

Yes but... We need to clean up penalties and mistakes. Almost 100 yards in penalties like illegal formation and false start. Taking so long to set up an offensive play, we had to call timeout - twice. We were getting our machine going, and instead of letting Woffy down one of their punts, we go to catch it on a weird bounce and fumble it away deep in our territory. Get our heads back on, and we will be OK.

I don't know if it's the fact they we're having to dig deep on the depth chart due to injuries, but the boneheaded penalties the past few weeks have been atrocious. I can understand holding, jumping offsides and to extent pass interference (as it has been proven time and time again that SoCon referees are flag happy when a pass play is remotely contested) My problem has been the late hit personal fouls. The 1st quarter late hit out of bounds on Wofford's 2nd drive, and then the 3rd quarter one where the play was called dead, and the Western player just kept pushing the Wofford runner back eventually throwing him to the ground. The second one was a drive extender as it would have been 4th down on Wofford's own 24. I thought under Bell we've done a nice job of cleaning this crap up, but it seems to be rearing it's ugly head again recently.

Edit: This link works on my iPhone but does not on my laptop. Don't know what is up with that.Has this been taken down? I get an error when I try to bring it up. The page loads but I get a "something went wrong" message. Can somebody share a breakdown or at least some of the main points? I also wonder if Coach Bell being on the referees non-stop just about the entire game is starting to backfire a little. I totally get how he felt like as a program we tended to have calls either go against us or not be called at all, so he has been trying to do the old "Coach K" approach of working them to try and get future calls. But man - it seems like every time they show him he is out on the field and giving a ref an earful. Not saying that a whole bunch of them they don't deserve, but sometimes I think you have to pick and choose your battles.

I think riding the SoCon refs like he does is way overdue and my opinion is that it will pay dividends in spades. The refs have to know that Kerwin is paying attention. I think they get absolutely no benefit of the doubt and Coach should continue to ride them hard on any questionable call. The psychology of this will pay off. Badger and beatdown is what he should do until their performance improves. Kerwin is smart and knows what he is doing.

Not sure because the link worked for me. The gist of his interview is he feels we have lost our confidence since Furman and he said they need to get it back. If you can listen it gave me a lot of insight into what coach thinks, how the team might be feeling and a bit of what we have been saying
