Who can blame a kid. No one is going to turn down a 6 digit payday. I never thought college sports would condone paying players to play sports. This is an unintended consequence of the NIL mess.

I don't blame them but at the same time FCS is the minor leagues to G5 and G5 is the minor leagues to P5

G5 to me is a no man’s land between FCS and FBS. If you go 11-1, you get to go to the Tidy Bowl in Mobile Alabama. There is really nothing for the G5s to play for. They can’t win or even play for a national championship no matter how well they do. I mean, no one from the Sun Belt or any of those conferences are ever going to make the playoffs even if it is expanded to 32 teams. At least, there is a chance for a championship in FCS.

Actually... starting next year the top 6 conference champions are guaranteed to be in the field of 12 teams playing for the National Championship. Just like now the top-ranked G5 team gets a spot in a "New Year's 6" bowl game. If the 12-team playoff happened this year, Liberty would be in it (playing against Florida State in a first-round game). Next year with the end of the PAC-12 I am not sure what that means for the conference champions, but possibly 2 G5-type teams can start geting in. Champs of ACC, SEC, Big10, and Big12 are in plus 2 more champions. www.ncaa.com/news/football/article/2023-12-03/how-12-team-college-football-playoff-will-work-teams-schedule-bidsI know FCS fans typically love to talk about the teams that moved up playing weird schedules, having to travel, and being relegated to some nothing bowl if they have a decent season. Being FBS brings a lot of additional costs, but it also brings more money in, more visibility, etc. If done right, it leads to more prestige (at least in perception), more donations, increased applications by better students, etc. We love to hate on App State here, but they are on TV frequently, have 30-40k fans showing up regularly, and continue to grow by leaps and bounds that is tied to their football team's FCS success but probably more by their move to FBS. I love FCS football, but anybody saying that they would decline a move up is IMO not being completely honest. I would expect NDSU and SDSU would move up if they had somewhere to go.
