The enrollment cliff she speaks of is a real thing especially with liberal arts colleges because they do not have the professional curriculum that comprehensive Regional Universities have. Western has not and will not be totally immune to this phenomenon. I think NC should do what many states have done including Georgia and combine some schools that make sense to combine geographically. It makes real financial sense and it is time to combine Western Carolina and UNCA into one university. That way, you have one administration and one athletic department, etc. and more students. I know some people say they do not want the place where they went to school to change its name but when it comes to dollars and cents it makes sense in many ways for Western and UNCA to merge. There are really no cons from a logical and financial point of view. There will be a lot of emotion when it happens but not really any concrete reasons to not combine them. It just makes sense. Otherwise UNCA will either become a money pit or go out of business as it continues to shrink and lose money.
