Voters in Jackson County will get to decide next year whether to allow alcohol sales countywide. "A nod by voters to alcohol sales countywide could bring profound changes to Cullowhee, in particular. Western Carolina University lacks the typical array of bars and restaurants found in most college towns. But that’s because Cullowhee is not actually a town, and thus is dry like the rest of the county." read more here

yeah lets keep a dead town, not! This will bring better athletes to WCU. Then, maybe the football team might not suck so bad. Having a wet campus will bring smarter and more spiritied students to WCU. In the long run, this would be great for WCU, Cullowhee, and Jackson County.

I don't know about it bring smarter students to WCU, but I do think alcohol sales will help the area grow and will become a catalyst to Cullowhee becoming a real college town, which is the only missing piece to make WCU the best place in NC to attend college. Once Cullowhee develops, Sylva will realize what they missed out on in not fully embracing the university.

Cullowhee was cool back in my day without the sale of alcohol in town. Maybe you are saying it lost it's coolness when I and my buddies graduated ;D. Nothing like a run into Sylva with your buddies for some liquids to bring back. I am sure if someone wants to drink at a party they can do so. Plenty of frats and non frat parties going on in the Whee. BigCat, We don't want to be like trashy Boone, do we? There are a lot local area stops around the Whee to walk, use a scooter or car...the old road near the library, the ol stops along the Post Office, and in town (the WCU strip, across from ol McKee Bldg!). Great place. I could see alums or local residents setting up a club/grill place (BYOB) in those areas, grill place to hear bands, everything WCU shop, even a club place on a nearby run down farm. yeah lets keep a dead town, not! This will bring better athletes to WCU. Then, maybe the football team might not suck so bad. ya, bring better athletes? You're nuts. You either are not an alum, a wanna be WCU student or have yet to graduate high school. One can obtain ol if they want it. WCU, the best kept secret.

On part about smarter students, WCU need some thing to bring more student to the College. we need a way to draw high student away from UNCA,UNCC, and other college,Quantity drives Quality. The town will not look trashy. If you look at the plans for NEW CULLOWHEE and the College TOWN CENTER. it should have a Classic Southern LOOK. There is no way WESTERN would build a Trashy town. I've seen Boone it looks like "Censored Word". Every time I go there I feel like I'm going to get shoot. For me I love WESTERN, I want the best for the school. Every student and Professor I ask, think alcohol needs to come to Cullowhee so it can grow and the college along with it.

I also have an idea about how to fill Whitmire with folks on a Saturday. We need to give the kids a reason to stick around Cullowhee on the weekend. We all know that WCU is a "suitcase college", and this issue needs to be reversed. I could get into the whole "liquor by the drink" thing, but that will be addressed by the voters of Jackson county next year. Let's hope they decide to enter the 21st century, and figure out a way to get more tax revenue from the additional tourist dollars generated by getting a beer or drink in a restaurant.
A unique idea to keep kids in Cullowhee for football games is to provide some incentive to stick around over the weekend. What about Western partnering up with a local group of businesses to give a discount on some type of goods or services for students that show their school ID?

I hear what Hickorypat talking about. everyone can say the Whee is Western and Western is the Whee. So if the Whee can get money come to the Whee in turn it start flowing into Western, and help western start growing.

How long has it been since you've been here? Liquer by the drink and beer and wine in resturants has been around in Sylva for years. You talking about Cullowhee? What resturants? Huddle House? Cullowhee Cafe? Wouldn't you first need to build a town with places to go? Everyone who doesn't live here is so quick to jump on this bandwagon it's ridiculous. There is way more to it than those simplistic solutions. We've all been there, tried that. Come up with something new and better. I feel Dr. Belcher and the new blood is trying to go out and win the community, but it will take time. This is the most fractured college town I've ever seen. It's gonna be a long haul, hopefully this new group has the patience to stick with it.
