Long before there was the Square in Hayesville, before there were baseball and softball fields and a playground, and even before Clay County itself existed, there was a small village. Not far from the Clay County Recreation Center and probably within reach of a stray softball, the remains of that village have been found. The ancient Cherokee village is estimated to date around 1300, according to Dr. Jane Eastman, an anthropology professor at Western Carolina University. Eastman, who is also the director of Cherokee studies at the college, and a team of students have been doing a final excavation of the site to locate as many artifacts as possible. After that, the county has plans for the site. www.claycountyprogress.com/articles/2012/06/07/news/doc4fd0aff0a5eb6344663200.txt
