ASHEVILLE — Over a period of about 30 years, Danny Williamson has built a dynasty in track and field at Western Carolina.
On average, he wins about one conference championship per year, and there appears to be no end in sight for the second most successful coach in the history of the Southern Conference.
When the Catamounts women's team won the SoCon Outdoors Championships on Sunday in Birmingham, Alabama, it marked the 29th league title for Williamson, who says he has lost count but believes this is his 30th year of coaching in Cullowhee.
Williamson has built a track and field dynasty on a budget that is less than half of some of the schools he competes against.
Samford, his biggest SoCon competitor in the men's and women's events, is fully funded with the NCAA maximum allowable scholarships (18 for women, 12.6 for men)
