Interesting to note that of the 9 SoCon teams, only 3 open with FBS opponents while another 3 open with D-II opponents. I have no idea where we fall into the conference this year. With the turnover, I won't be surprised if we have to fight to be in the top half, but I'll be disappointed if we are not.

It kind of feels like the same old thing - there is a team or two that most think are at the top, VMI at the bottom, and a whole bunch of teams that can finish anywhere from 2nd to 8th. Citadel played a lot of young guys and I expect them to be pretty good, Wofford has so many new coaches but have a fair amount of returning players from a 10-win team, even UTC with their unproven staff has a very talented roster. And Mercer ruined any chances of us making the postseason last year with a young QB while also giving Furman all they wanted on the road. My guess is another dogfight and we don't know much until everybody has played 3 or 4 conference games.

I agree and the only thing we have to go on is that 2-9 season we had year before last when we lost a bunch of starters. I hope I am wrong, but I think we should hope for the best but prepare ourselves for the worst. Winning football at WCU is like hens teeth, very scarce. We just go from year to year with little or no commitment from the administration and hope for the best. We finally have some consistency in our coaching staff and that is starting to pay dividend. I will be happy with Coach Speir and his staff next year win or lose because he is a good coach who wants to be in Cullowhee. At Western, that is about all we can ask for. We are not going to win a conference championship, probably not make the playoffs or win a national championship even in our best year because their overall commitment is not there from the administration. I am not complaining or griping. I am just stating the obvious. I like to dream of conference championships and even national championships but I know that the financial backing and foundation for sustained winning is just not there and it is not a priority of the university because other items are thought to be more pressing to the administration. They get paid to decide that.
