I found the current game predictions by the Massey ratings site. Massey only predicts D-I games, so they are looking at a 10 game schedule for WCU. Per the Massey rankings, the Cats go 5-5 overall in D-! games (but 6-5 counting Newberry), and 4-4 in the SoCon, beating VMI, Chattanooga, ETSU, & The Citadel. Losses per Massey will be to Furman, Samford, and Mercer in away games, and to Wofford at home. This will not get us a slot in the playoffs. www.masseyratings.com/team.php?t=8742&s=300937

I can't help but think that this is pretty accurate, only I'm not convinced Wofford beats us.

I think you're right. We need to go at LEAST 5-3 in the conference and beat GWU & of course, Newberry convincingly. That only gets us to 7-4 which puts us on the bubble. A SoCon win over a top 2 team in the conference wouldn't hurt.

With how much love some of the other conferences get, I don't think WCU gets in unless we have 8 wins and a max of 2 SoCon losses (probably holds true for all the conference unless some teams have really nice OOC wins). Newberry and GWU wins aren't going to impress the playoff committee. I could certainly see another near miss at 6-5 or 7-4. That still beats the heck out of those 1 and 2 win seasons from just a few years back, but 8 will be the magic number probably for all SoCon squads.

Even with the team beating the ankle biters, it's not enough for a shot at the playoffs. I think you're right. We need to go at LEAST 5-3 in the conference and beat GWU & of course, Newberry convincingly. That only gets us to 7-4 which puts us on the bubble. A SoCon win over a top 2 team in the conference wouldn't hurt. Unfortunately, I doubt in that scenario we would make the playoffs because that would make us 7-4 and with the win against Newberry, in the eyes of the playoff committee we would only be 6-4 (against D1) and not enough as GWU will not be much of an RPI boost (unless they have a great season), I am assuming you are still predicting we will lose to the UNC-CHeat, they will probably be better than last year I hate to say. Now, unless somehow we win the SoCon title with a (5-3) record, We would need to finish in the SoCon 6-2, unless we pull a miracle and beat UNC, and even after what happened with Austin Peay last year and the reason they gave for not allowing them in the playoffs, the committee is more concerned what we do against Division 1 FCS than Division 1 FBS. so I would say again we need to finish at worst 6-2 in SoCon play. Can we do it? I think we have a good shot. I think there is a good chance, it is safe for polls, and sports writers to predict us to not make the playoffs as that is a safe assumption considering our past even our recent semi-successful past. But Speir is now one of the veterans in this conference with Ayers gone and only time will tell. I do not think Wofford will be good this year (at best mediocre) but I would have preferred to have played them early to middle of the season rather than at the end, because sometimes figure it out during the end of the season, but in some cases do well in the beginning the fall off. Furman as had a number but who knows maybe we can pull this one out. Mercer, I really do think we are good enough to get revenge on them, The one that worries me the most in 2018 is Samford. We can beat them like last year, but we are at their place and they will be gunning for us for revenge and if they are a good team might be difficult. So here is my prediction, if we can get past Furman, Mercer, Samford or Wofford (or at least 2 of those 4), I think we can make the playoffs. But we have got to play those games almost with perfection and not make too many costly mistakes. Just my .02 cents. But I do think we will be better than Massey and others predict. Playoff bound we will only know during the season.
