here's the P&G winners and losers for today..... This week's Purple & Gold football picks (9-8-18) Chattanooga (1-0, 0-0 Southern) at The Citadel (0-1, 0-1 Southern) The home-standing Bulldogs use that home-field advantage for a four-point win over a disappointed Mocs team. Final score 21-17 Bulldogs VMI (0-1, 0-0 Southern) at Wofford (1-0, 1-0 Southern) The Terriers continue their homestand, as well as, their winning streak as they roll over the visiting Keydets. Final score 35-14 Terriers ETSU (1-0) at Tennessee (0-1) The Bucs travel to Knoxville, take a lickin', pick up a check and return to Johnson City, a little embarrassed at the final score. Final score 49-7 Vols Furman (0-1) at Elon (0-1) The Paladins want to avoid that 0-2 start at all costs as they travel to visit Elon and remember last season's 3 point loss on the road. The Paladins get a little revenge. Final score 28-24 Furman Jacksonville (1-0) at Mercer (0-1) The Bears open their home schedule hoping to gain back a little respect after last week's bashing at the hands of the Memphis Tigers. The Bears succeed as they roll over the Dolphins. Final score 35-7 Samford (1-0) at Florida State (0-1) The Bulldogs get the same feeling as the Dolphins, as they pick up a much larger check on their way back home to Homewood. Final score 42-14

All I can say is wow with the games today. A few games went the way I thought they would but UT-Chatt beating Cid in OT got me as well as Furman getting blown out. I knew Mercer would win but did not expect that much and I know it is still early in the game but Samford is up 13-0 against FSU!!! I hate to say it Western might be in for a long season if they do not step thier game up as it seems aside from ETSU and VMI the conference is stacked.

Finals....
ETSU - 3 Tennessee - 59 I think this is what everyone except the ETSU players expected
Furman - 7 Elon - 45 What an embarrassment for the Paladins and the SoCon, for one of the "supposed" premier SoCon teams to get literally demolished and manhandled by Elon is not good. I'm sure they were laughing at Western's score last week, look who's 0-2 this year. The Paladins have been outscored 14-93 in their first two games - bring up the question, is Elon that good or are the Paladins that bad?
Chattanooga - 29 (overtime) The Citadel - 28 I expected the Bulldogs to win this game in Charleston. After watching the game, I'm still not sure if the Bulldogs are playing poorly, or the Mocs have improved that much, or both teams are just mediocre.
VMI - 14 Wofford - 59 It's going to be a very long season for the Keydets
Jacksonville - 3 Mercer - 45 I figured the Bears would rebound this week against a PFL team, but I didn't expect this much scoring from them.
-------------------------
still in progress late in the 2d quarter
Samford - 23 FSU - 14
all I can say is, the Bulldogs may be under rated.....

What the scores show is that the top-half ***could be*** up for grabs. Samford seems to have a lock right now on the top-spot in the power poll (don't know if Hodges will throw 4 ints for the rest of the season), and Wofford is at #2 with another 2-0 start. But Furman has to find a QB and seemed totally shell-shocked yesterday (their board is going nuts with what they think was the worst game many of them have seen). UTC is 2-0, and is moving into the contender conversation although I still don't know if they are really good or just fortunate with the schedule and the 2 teams they have played. Citadel is talented, but already 0-2 in SoCon play. Mercer and WCU are talented, but given who they have played I still don't know how good either one of them are.
Not that it wasn't expected, but things are shaping up for a serious battle for teams that aren't that different from one another to fill-in for the standings. One loss (say 4-4 in conference vs 5-3) could be the difference in tied for 3rd to tied for 6th in the league.
