After 2 games, my takeaways are this: GOOD - 0 turnovers on offense, rushing offense, rushing defense drastically improved BAD - pass defense in the secondary (much better in 2nd half of GW game), 3rd down defense and inability to get off the field UGLY - place kicking.....kickoffs, PAT's, and field goal attempts all need big time help

Regarding Newberry, they have a few good to very good players. But they lost to Florida Tech 17-10 last weekend, and I think the combination of them being motivated, us sitting some guys, and a handful of bad decisions that let them get 2 freebie TD throws made that game what it was. I bought into the talk about them having a bunch of D1 guys who were nonqualifiers, but I started looking up some of the players and I couldn't find anything on them being guys who were supposed to go to big schools. So this seems a little more like our shock leading to some excuses. GWU is probably as good or better than Newberry, and it looked like it was going to be another one of those games. But the GWU QB couldn't put the pressure on our D with getting out if the pocket, and after we got the first INT it felt like the guys just really picked it up. We are 2-0 and a really good chance to be 3-0 next week, and that is exactly where we all hoped and projected we would be (regardless of scores). Newberry DL Tyrone Kelly was a Shrine Bowler who would have gone to the Univ. of So. Carolina if his HS grades had been a little stronger. His parents are good friends of mine. Fine young man from a great family.

Hopefully my comments about Newberry haven't ticked some people off. A number of their players (the QB Greg Ruff included) had a ton of high school success and accolades including all-star teams, all-region/all-state recognition, etc. Clearly they have some good players who played very good against the Cats. But my point is it wasn't like we were playing the team from Last Chance U who had a bunch of 4* and 5* players all over the field who were supposed to be at prime time SEC and ACC programs. Every D2 school is probably going to have a handful of kids who could have gone somewhere bigger, and probably several more who were totally overlooked who could easily be on an FCS roster. I was just saying it seems like the Western fans (me included - I also made the claim that they were probably better than GWU and VMI) tried to make Newberry out to be better than they are, partly to tell ourselves it was a better win than it was. But I have said it several times - an ugly, gut-check win is better than a pretty loss.
Now on to 3-0 with a win over VMI.
