The only reason to punt is to play the field position game. Yesterday, 3/4 (75%) of our punts led to points for Furman 2TD and 1 FG all in the first half, giving them a 3TD lead. Both TD's started deep in Furman territory. We went 3/4 on forth down conversions. Our offense is much stronger than our defense. Makes sense to me to play the probabilities and attempt to keep the "O" on the field. I know this is risky, but what do we have to lose looking at future games. What do you think?

I think the both VMI and Furman have shown there is a total lack of respect for our defense in the Southern Conference. They show this by going for it on 4th down, for a very different reason, they know they the Catamount defense can not stop them. VMI was 6 of 10 on 4th down conversions and Furman was 2 of 2 on 4th down conversions.

Furman - yes. VMI - they are proving that is just they way they are going to play. The Keydets went for it 7 times against Mercer yesterday, and 10 times against us. They just had more possessions/plays against us.
Furman also went for it quite a bit on 4th down last year if I recall correctly (for the season - not just against us).
But out in the middle of the field, I kind of agree that you base it on how the defense is performing. We should probably go for it more than we do.

Furman went for it inside there own 30 twice. Both times were half a yard. They felt 100% they were going to get a first down.

That’s probably why we aren’t coaches. Unless I was backed up on my own 30 I’d probably go for it, within reason, 75% of the time. It would have to be 5 yards or longer for me to punt, especially if I had the offense we have.
