I have figured out you must be watching the wrong team on Saturdays because our S.T. has always sucked under Speir. Please stop saying they are young. That is your excuse for everything wrong with this team. There are alot of young team playing ball and alot of them are winning so how do you explain that. App State is the 2nd youngest team in FBS and they are ranked 25th. People like you are why the team is ok stinking because they know you will make excuses for them esp the coaches. I expect the Special Teams Coordinator to be fired soon. Speir mentioned how bad the kickoff return really hurt during post game. Somebody has to go to make it “look good / feel good”. My guess? If you’re not from Appalachian St ..... don’t be surprised if you receive a “pink slip” soon! I hope nobody gets fired. Our Special Teams Coordinator has been in Cullowhee for a while. Special Teams like the Defense is young. It takes awhile. Firing people and starting over is not the solution. Only time will fix this. If you fire the Special Teams guy now, who replaces him now to make things better. We have had good special teams in the past with the same guy being in charge. I love all these people on here with an opinion that have never played a down of organized football in their entire life, but they sure know what needs to be done so that we win all our games.

You better watch what you say about people on this board not playing Football & do not know what they are talking about. I played football for 4 years & they are absolutely correct in their evaluation of the Coaching Staff. Coach Speir is weak based on his W/L Record & his inability to make quick changes based on the dictates of a game. He has also surrounded himself with coaches that are not helping him achieve the goals that are necessary for developing a strong Football Program. Coach Speir came to WCU with a resume that was totally lacking in the necessary qualities & experience to be a HC. It is one thing to not know what you are talking about when it comes to WCU Football but it is another thing for you to not see reality on the football field weekend after weekend. What you are now seeing is what we have gotten for the pass 6 years & what we will continue to get with the present coaching staff. I’m just not willing to become a “Happy Failure” like a few people on this board. If Coach Speir reported directly to you & your continued employment was determined by how successful the Football Program was, what would you do? The big problem with WCU Football is that the AD & Chancellor are not being held accountable for their part in this failure. Their jobs do not seem to be in immediate jeopardy like a Football Coach. It seems they are not concerned about losing their jobs no matter how terrible the Football Team performs. The BOT is not putting pressure on anyone to make changes & could care less how their inactions impact the Alumni.

And we've sucked at special teams play all that time too. Kickoff coverage has been horrendous over the last several years to say the least. Kickoffs rarely go deep enough for a touchback. Punting has been a bright spot but punt coverage and punt returning has been less than ideal over this same stretch of time. Issues on special teams isn't because of youth. It's coaching, play calling and game strategy plain and simple.

I graduated from WCU in 1982 and have followed the Cats for over 40 years. Speir’s teams, especially on defense, do not come close to those fielded by Coach Bob Waters, Western’s last successful HC. Kerwin Bell, the Head Coach at Valdosta State, has spent considerable time in Jackson County during the summers, so he’s familiar with and fond of the area. He was a record setting QB under Steve Spurrier at UF, and has an extensive and highly successful coaching resume, both in high school and college. In addition, he has deep ties throughout the recruiting-rich Sunshine State. He would be a major upgrade in Cullowhee, and would likely accept the job if offered, IMO.

This is great info but you can be sure that Eaton will pay no attention to your comments. You are totally correct with your comments about Coach Waters. I attended all the games during that period of time. It was a great time to be a Catamount & when you attended WCU, the students were very loyal to the Cats.

I graduated in 77 so was there for four years of Coach Waters coached teams. While the most success occurred after I was gone, there were still some good teams during those years and I always thought they looked well coached, etc. unlike these past few years. I am not joining the "fire the coaches" chorus as yet, but there is certainly valid criticism of this staff that has to be addressed soon.

Coaching makes a huge difference. Ruffin McNeil was fired by ECU. Where is ECU today with wins and monetary contributions? Ruffin McNeil takes over Oklahoma defense last week (after defensive coordinator was fired) and look at the results for the Sooners. I'm not advocating a HC change for the Cats, but after the season, if no dramatic improvement, a few of those assistants need to go! Personally, I don't like the way our OC calls the game plan, but if looking at the bottom line only, he IS getting the job done so far this year. On defense, many of our tackles are made while the ball carrier is putting a footprint on the tacklers chest some 10 yards down field.

Uncle Fester just about killed Western Football forever. We will get better on defense when these kids grow up. As far as all of the folks on here that comment about how bad the coaching is and what should be done, I stand by what I said. Most of the people that comment don't know what they are talking about and are trying to be Monday morning QBs. I hope Coach Speir is our Head Football Coach for the next 25 years if he wants to be. You are correct that the main problem has been and still is the administration and BOT. They have no vision for athletics or football and halfway fund it. At our level, we can't keep assistants because the good ones will leave for more money. So that is why we have to break in new assistants every 2 or 3 years. So even if you cleaned house tomorrow, no matter who you bring in, they would have the same problems that Speir is having. We tried your strategy when we fired Hodges and Briggs and a host of other coaches because they were not winning. The problem was not the coaches. The problem is the leadership of the school, plain and simple.

You guys are right. Randy should fire everyone that has anything to do with Western football tomorrow and start over. Coach Speir has done nothing for Western or the football team and there is not one football coach in Cullowhee worth his salt. You have convinced me. I hear that Dennis Wagner is looking for a job at the FCS level and he knows Western. Maybe we should call him. To summarize, all of our football coaches suck, all the players suck and the only way to fix this is to fire and get rid of the people that are working day and night to fix the problem. I wish I was as smart as you guys when it comes to running a football program.
