This is an interesting story. SoCon sports fans are wise to keep an eye on the Charleston paper, which still does grown up reporting in the league For whatever reason, it appears that Eaton never received this memo. WCU has not upgraded its Basketball Footprint in the SoCon. It is always funny to me that Football & Basketball has been getting their tails beat by Wofford for a number of years. Wofford has an enrollment of around 1,700 students & cost over $50,000 per year to attend that institution. WCU’s Freshman Class has more students than Wofford has in its total enrollment. Last year we lost to them in Football, Basketball & Baseball.

I agree that the conference is stronger this year from top to bottom and the top 4 schools are all pretty good, but it is only one year. I see the trend but the SoCon Commissioner is talking like we have arrived and we will always be in the top 10 RPI wise. I would like to see the Western Carolina's, Chattanooga's and Citadel's of the world up their games also like we have seen Wofford, Furman, ETSU and UNCG do. As a conference, we are going to have to work our tails off to stay in the top 10 RPI wise. If not, we will fall back into the 20s. We are still not perceived by the majority of the world as a great basketball fan. The average fan does not know what an RPI is. We need to get 2 teams in the tournament and win some games or this will be just a flash in the pan. People will say,I told you so if we are one and done in the tournament this year.

Right now the SoCon is comprised of “haves” & “have nots”. I watched the SoCon Finals yesterday & it is obvious that the Basketball Program at WCU is nowhere close to the top 4 in the SoCon. The biggest difference is the big guys on their teams. They have depth at the Center Position & at the Power Forward Position. If the Basketball Coach can not bring in big Centers & Big Forwards at WCU, the Cats will never be able to compete with the big 4. If a school the size of Wofford can successfully recruit “Big Guys”, why can’t WCU? Does the Basketball Program at WCU have a Recruiting Budget comparable to Wofford, UNCG, ETSU, or Furman? If not, the Program will continue to suck air from the Big 4.

Honestly it has always been a problem for as long as I can remember. I think the recruiting budget has improved because of NC Promise but I have no idea if we are near what the top 4 teams in the conference have recruiting budget wise. Also, we really never get a true center when we recruit a big man. In my opinion, we have always had a power forward type at center and never a true center. I do hope that Coach Prosser will be successful and lead us to the Socon Championship. Heck, I would be happy with consistent winning seasons with some 20 win seasons sprinkled in.

We haven't had a true center on the roster in decades. Probably have to go back to the Cottrell era

Speaking from very little knowledge, but with the way the game's played today, is there real need for a traditional center? Seems like a lot of college and pro teams forgo the big guy for multi-positioned players.
