With Altuve, Correa, Springer and some other front line players on the DL a good portion of the season, Tyler was in the lineup many days. But with his BA hanging down around .225, they brought up some young guys from the farm system (Myles Straw, Yordan Alvarez and Aledmys Diaz) who came up and starting hanging up some numbers.
Then when the front line guys get healthy and come off the DL, someone has to be moved off the 25-man roster to make room. Guess who gets "Designated for Assignment"? (Also known as "Putting out on Waivers") Tyler and Tony Kemp.
Tyler and Tony have been bounced up and down between the majors and the minors the maximum number of times allowed. They are very close friends.
Any team who is willing to put the DFA player on their 25-man active roster can sign the DFA player. (They have to move someone OFF the 25-man roster to make room.) Not sure about compensation the signing team must give to the other team. I think the time to claim a DFA is a week. If no ML team claims the DFA player, they can stay with the organization and go down to the minor leagues with the same team. Or they can go home and hang up their cleats.
The Dodgers traded a minor league pitcher for Tyler because Chris Taylor broke his arm and they need a RH bat right now. I do not expect Tyler to play at lot of entire games with LA. Probably pinch hit. Maybe DH when they play interleague play in an American League park.
I'm a little surprised that someone has not claimed Tony Kemp. He's been down in the .240 BA range, but Tony has great speed and can play OF and also 2B very well. He played 2B in the CWS with Vanderbilt.
Tyler needs to make an impact whenever he comes to the plate in LA during the rest of this season.
