It's nice to dream.
However, we can't get the admin to spend the required dollars to successfully compete in the FCS, much less the FBS.
Conservatively we would need more than $10 million added to our athletic budget per year, as well as, a major makeover/upgrade of the football stadium ($20-$30 million) to compete in the FBS.
Nice to dream, but that's an IMPOSSIBLE dream for Western Carolina athletics.
Even if Chattanooga, ETSU, Mercer, & Samford all departed for the FBS, WCU would remain in the SoCon. Regretfully, I've come to the conclusion that athletics at WCU will remain stable while all the old Carolina's Conference members pass us by.

While it’s nice to dream and hope that one day we will be able to move up, the guy makes some interesting points if you follow his whole conversation on Twitter.

Hard to even find the conversation on his Twitter page (and I am not a Tweeter), but I would be interested in how he deemed those the "top" FCS schools? Would seem the argument would be to create a new league with the most FBS-ready, and a number of schools on his list are far from that in terms of things like support, facilities, success, etc.

Unless you're moving to a Power 5 conference what's the purpose of moving to FBS. No chance of winning a National Championship, play in crappy bowls that no one cares about. Yeah you may get one of the big boys come to play you at home. Look at App, they have no rival game, travel is horrendous and their Bowls are in Mobile, Myrtle Beach and New Orleans the week before Christmas. Nah, I'll take the FCS any day.

I agree with everything except the rival part. The hillbillies took theirs with them, the boys from 'gnatsville.

So schools like Gardner-Webb, Campbell, Elon would not go for that nor be willing to drop to Division 2 again, they have been there and done that and have been done that. Heck Campbell has now moved to scholarship football. Past that, it would not surprise me if one day the FCS as we know it goes away and those in the FBS Power 5 and many if not all of those in the American Athletic Conference make a jump to form a new division, I say many because a lot of those in the AAC would probably be picked by the P5 to join their conference/league mega conference(ex: Houston, Cincinnati,Central Florida, Navy, Memphis) and others like ECU, Tulane USF, Tulsa be left out. What would likely happen would be another major Conference alignment where those conferences pick a number of schools and either break away from the NCAA or force another divisional split and form their own bylaws create their own NFL like playoff or bowl system. Those left behind from G5 FBS schools and the FCS schools would likely merge and consolidate to form a new NCAA league still participating in bowls some newly created and some left over such as the Liberty Bowl and Belk Bowl in Charlotte. But those huge money making bowls would go with the newly formed Power League or changed into something else. Personally, I like the FCS method, I just think that instead of 24 teams, that 32 teams should be allowed in the NCAA tournament and get rid of the top 8 teams that get a bye. However, I would say that 32 teams is enough.

I used to think this major move in the P5 breaking off was right around the corner, but I now ask myself “why”? The P5 already makes all the money and are basically locked into placing all the teams into the playoffs. Teams that aren’t real serious about football year-in and year-our aren’t just going to happily leave those conferences and the tens of millions of dollars they get so more competitive teams can move in.
I see playoff expansion as basically guaranteed, but less for ensuring a G5 school makes it and MORE for ensuring all 5 of the P5 conferences get a team in. Once that happens, there really is no reason for the P5 to want much to change since their monopoly will have grown even more. The one thing that will change is the money games with FCS schools will probably go away entirely to ensure the resumes are stronger to be one of the 8 (or however many get in).
When that happens, it will become more important for FCS leagues to focus on regional alignment to build stronger rivalries and reduce costs because schools like App and GaSouthern will get all those games we have been financing our athletics with.
Maybe this is totally wrong, but again I ask “why would the P5 really want much to change?”
