I used to think this major move in the P5 breaking off was right around the corner, but I now ask myself “why”? The P5 already makes all the money and are basically locked into placing all the teams into the playoffs. Teams that aren’t real serious about football year-in and year-our aren’t just going to happily leave those conferences and the tens of millions of dollars they get so more competitive teams can move in.
I see playoff expansion as basically guaranteed, but less for ensuring a G5 school makes it and MORE for ensuring all 5 of the P5 conferences get a team in. Once that happens, there really is no reason for the P5 to want much to change since their monopoly will have grown even more. The one thing that will change is the money games with FCS schools will probably go away entirely to ensure the resumes are stronger to be one of the 8 (or however many get in).
When that happens, it will become more important for FCS leagues to focus on regional alignment to build stronger rivalries and reduce costs because schools like App and GaSouthern will get all those games we have been financing our athletics with.
Maybe this is totally wrong, but again I ask “why would the P5 really want much to change?”
I think the P5 may break away from the NCAA altogether and form their own organization. Then they don't have to worry about recruiting rules, pay the players, and other structural setbacks. Additionally, they can negotiate TV contracts and keep all the money instead of giving some up to the NCAA. This may be too simplistic, but I think it's a possibility.
