This goes way off topic, but whenever the next round of realignment comes along I personally wish they would get back to regionalization for these G5 leagues. C-USA is spread from Florida (Miami-area with FIU and FAU) up to Virginia (ODU), and out to a bunch of Texas schools. The Sun Belt has some similar issues, the AAC is spread out, and on and on. The P5 leagues are as well, but there is so much money there nobody seems to care.
FCS has some very strange and spread out teams here and there, but for the most part our level has it much closer to right. I hear talking heads on sports shows that are suggesting a Group of 5 playoffs and honestly that would probably be better for college football - get those teams in more meaningful and higher paying games to at least provide exposure. That is what schools like App State, Memphis, UCF (the past couple of years), etc. should probably be pushing for more than being fixated on moving into a P5 league since who in their right mind would move out to give those schools a seat???
Is Memphis or App or <insert another 10-win G5 team> better than Rutgers or Vanderbilt or <insert another crappy P5 school>? I'd argue they probably are on the football field. But conferences look at the value a school brings to include market, facilities, other athletic programs, etc. And the majority of those factors keep schools out (along with Rutgers and Vanderbilt and the like never willingly giving up their $10s of millions every year from being a doormat in those leagues).

I just saw on the App Football Facebook page that several fans are certain the ACC (not the AAC) will certainly be calling them to join. They need to put the crack pipe down, the AAC doesn't have interest in the goons, much less the ACC!! They think that winning in football is all that matters. They bring absolutely nothing to the table TV ratings wise. ECU was lucky to get in the AAC, the only other NC school that they would even consider is UNCC for the Charlotte market. Congrats to the goons, they have an excellent program, but I just don't see them getting any other conference bid short of CUSA. App State may very well end up in CUSA at some point, I do think they can fit the mold there and would do well. But the reason UNCC got in over APP State back then is because UNCC for one made it clear when they started their football program that they were going to transition to the FBS market, I mean they only were an FCS team for 2 or 3 years I think, they joined no conference during the transition from FCS to FBS and their other sports, joined CUSA a year earlier than football. Also, UNCC had the benefit of being a previous member of CUSA and CUSA basically just let them back in. They have something that App State does not and that is a pretty good basketball tradition (all App has is a year or so under Buzz Peterson and Bobby Cremins). Plus UNCC give CUSA the Charlotte market. ECU was lucky to get in and that was due to Terry Holland working his butt off to get ECU there. Still when the former Big East Commissioner was there John Marinatto (aka Marinara Meatball) as I always referred to him, he had no interest in ECU, he invited all these teams to join including Boise State but he did not want ECU because of the basketball history and that Greenville is not a major market. It took Holland's relationship with new Big East Commissioner at the time Mike Aresco before ECU was let in with Tulane and when that happened the Catholic schools (basketball only) lost it and broke away, citing they did not want to be in a conference with ECU and Tulane which have horrible traditions in basketball. So they broke away were given the rights to the Big East name and the American was created for the former Big East schools with football. And the only reason UCONN is going back to the Big East is for basketball they have basically sacrificed their football program for the basketball program. I am not sure what will ultimately become of UCONN football, either FBS independent, drop to the MAC, go back to FCS and be like Villanova, or just drop football all together.

I have heard its on over at Boneyard Banter and Hoist the Colors too. Their AD has Cincinnati connections and Cincinnati has a good all around program in football and basketball and even baseball has improved. He would be wise to take it.

I remember watching the App State bowl game when they played against UAB and if I remember correctly I think I heard the commentator say that the new head coach at App State allows the players to handle all the situations with the football team because they are a player driven team. They even said he lets them choose who they want to be recruited and if a player transfers in who the players feel won't fit what the program is about then he listens to them about it and tries to fix the problem.
