ASUN Announces Exploration of Expansion & Building New NCAA Division I Multisport Conference The ASUN Conference and Commissioner Ted Gumbart announced on Wednesday afternoon that the league membership has committed to a full exploration of multiple expansion opportunities. In one of the future scenarios, the current ASUN members partner with expansion members to form a new DI multisport conference. The FAQ section below pertains to the specific steps on how the ASUN would collaborate with the CCSA (Coastal Collegiate Sports Association) to build a new multisport conference. The parenthetical references are to the applicable bylaw in the 2019-2020 NCAA Division I Manual. >> How do NCAA Division I institutions form a new conference? - NCAA member schools may join together to form a conference (3.02.3.2 Member Conference, 3.3.3.2 Member Conference Election). This process elected the CCSA to Division I Conference membership. This Q&A deals specifically with how the ASUN and CCSA will create a "Multisport" conference. Once multisport status is achieved, the conference is eligible for legislative approval to be classified as a Core Conference; core conference status permits automatic qualification (AQ) into NCAA Championships. The chronological steps in this plan are: a) ASUN Conference expands to 20 members (by June, 2023) b) The ASUN transfers rights to the ASUN name and marks to the CCSA c) The ASUN 7 join the CCSA (July 1, 2023) d) The CCSA adopts the ASUN name as a multisport conference e) The remaining ASUN members adopt the name United Athletic Conference asunsports.org/general/2019-20/releases/20200122lh6utq

Conference Evolution: ASUN/CCSA/UAC
Do you anticipate other conferences will follow the ASUN lead in developing new conferences? I don’t, for a number of reasons. One, we are the only Division I conference in our footprint that does not sponsor football. That means we are the only one that can start football. The ability to build a new football conference primarily in the southeast is a dominant factor. A second key factor is that the ASUN is well versed in conference realignment and we recognize the need to be innovative, to be bold, and to meet the real market demands of the institutions and their students. Thankfully, we are blessed with a visionary set of Presidents that are willing to have an eye focused on the future. I also think there is a strong possibility that the steps we are executing may trigger some change in the future. The NCAA is studying its championship financial model, the role of Automatic Qualification in championship field size and selection, and it would be a natural reaction after our announcement for some form of moratorium to be put in place.

So maybe I am slow but does this mean all the ASUN teams and all the big south are merging? Are they still going to be part of the NCAA? Are they going to be FCS or FBS if they stay?

It is not worth much. That posts says FBS multiple times and mentions teams from current FBS conferences leaving to join, but then says FCS for football. Multiple schools already in FBS conferences aren’t going to drop down to play FCS football, just like multiple football-playing schools in the current Big South or already associated with the ASUN aren’t going to have the money to become FBS programs (fund more scholarships, increase stadium sizes and get to the required attendance numbers, etc.). FBS and FCS are football-only designations, and what I ***think*** this meant to say is that current FCS-playing football teams from the BigSouth and current ASUN-related schools will be a new FCS football conference and all other sports will be D1.
