So proud of all our student athletes in WNC. Can someone please expalin to me why wcu football program doesn’t offer players in their own back yard. I remember as a kid watching WCU play and my dad telling me where they played in high school so many starters were from WNC

Well first of all, not all football players in WNC are capable of playing Division 1 football.
Of those that are Div. I capable athletes, there's at least 14 Division I teams in NC alone that are competing for that small pool of players, not to mention the schools in other states around NC that recruit in the state, ie Chattanooga, ETSU, Tenn. etc.
Another factor against WCU landing local talent is the simple fact that those kids that are capable of winning a scholarship, usually want to get out of the area for their college experience. AS you know, Heath Shuler attended Tennessee on scholarship.
I do think that WCU offers some of potential players - PWO opportunities. I'm sure WCU would love to have a roster full of WNC athletes, but if you want to compete in the SoCon, you must recruit Div. I caliber athletes, where ever they are from.

I think everyone thinks their area's kids are the best out there and at minimum should be playing D1 football and more often than not thats just not the case. NC, in my opinion, has never been a hotbed of great college athletes compared to states like Georgia, Florida and Texas. I get that the WNC people want more athletes to stay home but maybe those athletes want to go other places. I know when I was a senior in high school I had wanted to go as far away as possible...Like University of Oregon far away. Could have played football for Methodist College but Fayettenam wasn't where I wanted to be for 4 years after I took my visit. Ended up at WCU and never regretted it but it was still 3 hours from home, not 30 mins to an hour.
I do know some coaches and trainers who do not think highly of our coaches recruiting tactics. Have also heard some of our coaches can be asses to the high school coaches and they will not recommend WCU to a player because of that. I have had at least 4 coaches/trainers from local schools as well as some others say they will never recommend a kid go to WCU to play football after having to deal with a few of our coaches - some who are there still and some who are gone now.

This should NEVER happen. We went through this with the Wagner staff, and I thought it had changed under Speir. I guess not. With the piss poor win/loss record, this is just another good reason WCU needs a fresh start with an NEW coaching staff in the football program as SOON as possible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mark is from Kannapolis, NC and I'm from Concord, NC. Both in Cabarrus County. Every year this county sends numerous kids to D-1 (FBS & FCS) as well as all the other divisions. I live beside a current HC in the county and he was a one time asst at Concord High. The coaches in this county almost beg WCU to look at our players, but it's just crickets from WCU. In the 45 years that I've been following WCU Football you can count on 1 hand, certainly 2 how many Cabarrus County players have received a scholarship to WCU.

I myself have not experienced this but I have a friend named Joe who was being recruited by Western for football and he told this boy Cameron who wanted to come and play basketball that "you don't want to go to Western cause the coaches are asses and most students won't talk to you unless your an athlete".

Bad explanation on my part in the original post. Not trying to protect anyone. I would chalk this up to a few bad apples though and it’s not a trend across all of our current coaching staff.

I do not think WCU tries to own NC recruiting. Mack Brown has proven what working your home state produces and owns it. I can not for the life of me can't figure out why Coach Spier doesn't dig in right here in NC. I would be camped out at programs like Reidsville, Shelby, Crest, Wake Forest, Wallace Rose Hill, Northeastern, Mallard Creek, Dudley, Vance Co., North Lincoln, E. Surry. I mention these schools because year in and year out they produce athletes with winning culture. They're used to being great. Some of these schools have elite D1 talent, but I know for a fact at 3 of these schools they haven't offered any kids. These schools are filled with kids that are D1AA talent. The QB at Reidsville has been offered by Wofford. Why would we let an in state kid leave for a conference rival and never make a pitch. Over the last 6 years, Reidsville has had kids go to UNC (2), App State (2), WSSU (4), Fayetteville St (2), All of these kids have been either been pwos, scholarship or earned full scholarship. 1 pwo at App was 3 year starting LB, 2 at WSSU have graduated and started 4 years. 2 at Fayetteville St had other offers. We have a 2020 who is 6'4" 280 OT. 4 year starter, all conference/area. Not a sniff. Breon Pass is a 3 star with offers from every program in NC except WCU. Why. Hell the kid has offers from Texas A&M and SC, but WCU doesn't at least offer. Trust me when I say there are kids at E Surry, Northeastern, Reidsville and Shelby that can play at WCU and hit the ground running Crazy thing about it Reidsville has former WCU players pushing WCU coaches to take a look at these kids. N Lincoln has a former Cat on staff pushing kids. They don't even visit the schools. It's getting old. I'm sure it's the case at most schools but I know these kids from Reidsville. It's not a matter of grades or behavior that's preventing them from going. A lot of these kids will break a generational chain by getting into school. As a WCU allum, I'd love for Western to be that place.
