who cares about the band. I go to watch football not the band. The band does not win national championships and build the school up to the typical interested student.

Pretty sure HaywoodCat was being sarcastic, but I’ll take the bait. There’s right much band-bashing on here. I have no personal connection, but how many kids are there in the band? Like 450 or so? And they’ve achieved some things in the band world and received broad accolades. Anybody who thinks that doesn’t benefit the school is fooling themselves. Seems like most of us who hope for excellence at Western would look at the good band vs. good football argument and ask “why not both?”

As a student who’s in the band lol, we’re easily one of the top in the country. We’re supposed to be performing with Ohio state this year. But back to the argument, half the student body comes to watch the band, As band members we Are there for the football team in every win and loss and we just want them to do better. The real truth, the student body doesn’t like Mark Speir as a coach. He is a solid guy and is nice every time I say hi. This going forward we do watch games when we travel, we watched the Alabama game on the road to Macy’s. The band does care about the football team. Students want to have a good time and see wins, proof is the basketball team this year.

Graduate of1973, it bothers me to see people to continue throwing crap at the band. I follow all units from WCU. I go to Cullowhee to see both the football game and the band.

Just asking as I am not a Mark fan. What do you mean by the student body does not like him? Any examples of how and why they don't like him?

Living in Haywood Co. I am asked that question all the time "How does that coach keep his job?" This comes from folks that don't even follow football.
Well bottom line, the fans should sue the trustees for renewing the contract and let the their insurance pay out the 5 yr. contract. Only way out I can see.

You are kidding yourself, IF you think something is going to happen to Speir prior to the end of his contract (that's the next 5 seasons for those that don't know).
The leadership of the university and the BOT are sitting back, fat - dumb - and happy. No changes are in store for Western Carolina football, maybe an assistant coach or two, that lands a better job opportunity, but nothing else.

Shopping in Dillard,GA....”Why did Western give a 5yr contract to the football coach? I heard he’s building a million dollar home at Bear Lake. I’m tired of giving annual donations along with 4 season tickets for a bunch of losses.”
No answers from me.

Perhaps, but I just can’t see a 1-10 or an 0-11 in 2020 (or whenever we start back) being shrugged off or ignored. Embarrassing is embarrassing, and it’s just not good for business. Speir could parlay his ASU connections into a job TODAY if he chose.
