I can’t see that WCU will be immune from this trend. Granted we do not have the budget that an ECU or a Furman has but we do not have the revenue streams either that they have. Many collegiate sports teams are a budget drain and are a net cost in the best years. I don’t know anything but baseball, softball, women’s tennis, volleyball and even soccer could be candidates to suspend or cut. Again, I don’t know anything but Western will not be excluded from this downturn. Also when it comes to budget cutting for survival, there are no sacred cows. It comes down to dollars and cents. I think the last to be cut will be football and men’s and women’s basketball. There are no easy choices. History and emotion should not and probably will not be considered.

It'll be interesting to see how it's all made to work. Will Title IX balance be maintained, or will the NCAA make adjustments? Challenging times ahead

I am sure that title IX will have to be maintained because of political correctness if nothing else. So I would think that like Furman, we might cut a couple of men’s sports before any women’s sports because it is allowed to have more female athletes than male athletes but not the other way around. Instead maybe we will cut salaries of all head coaches first and see if that is enough. Or maybe we are in great shape financially and no cuts will be needed. I doubt that is the case though so I expect we will see some belt tightening soon. Our mission like every other college in America is to educate students so I would think that athletics will be the first to go. I guess it takes a global pandemic to bring into focus what is Really important and what the real priorities are. Alabama and LSU, etc. will eliminate entire schools or academic departments before they cut any athletic teams.

Western Carolina can not cut ANY sports program IF they want to remain in NCAA Division I status, WCU currently sponsors the very minimum number of sports to remain in Div. I classification. However, they could cut scholarships in any and all programs.

I suppose it's possible the NCAA might adjust qualifications for the classification

East Carolina cutting four athletics programs due to budget shortfall
East Carolina University says it is cutting four sports programs because of budget problems. The university says the COVID-19 pandemic has increased an athletics budget shortfall to $10.2 million. ECU says men's swimming and diving, women's swimming and diving, men's tennis, and women's tennis will be cut by athletics.
With the cuts, the university is at the minimum number of programs that the NCAA requires for Division I FBS schools. This will impact 68 student-athletes and nine coaches. ECU says in addition to cutting the four sports, it will also make other budget cuts.
That includes eliminating several vacant positions, a limit on summer school for student-athletes, and suspending all professional development/conferences for at least a year.
