With the talk of the ASUN split/realignment and starting a new football conference, how about mixing up the SoCon, Big South, and OVC into something like this?
Conference A: Austin Peay, Eastern Kentucky, E. Illinois, Murray St, SEMO, Tennessee State, UT Martin, Monmoth
Conference B. Charleston Southern, The Citadel, Furman, Gardner-Webb, NC A&T, Hampton, VMI, Wofford
Conference C. Chattanooga, ETSU, Kennesaw St., Jacksonville St, Mercer, North Alabama, Tennessee Tech, Samford, Western Carolina
Thoughts, suggestions?

what sucks for me is no matter what conf we would be in we don't have a natural rival in any of them

With all those teams, I’d figure out a way not to include Monmouth because of their location. And I would put Campbell in (Hampton would also probably make sense as they are closer than Monmouth and gives NC A&T a natural rival).
If I am counting correctly, there are 6 schools just from the state of TN. So you could go with all of them along with WCU, A&T, and Campbell and have a 9-team league all within 2 states that border one another.
Or you could get creative and come up with multiple conferences that are more common in their make-up (I.e. “public” vs “private”, over 10k students vs under, that kind of thing).
WCU, ETSU, UTC, Jax St, Tennessee Tech, Kennesaw State, NC A&T is the start of a “large school” conference. I am not sure about the size and status of some of the other schools, but it wouldn’t seem too hard to get another couple of schools with larger enrollments. I believe schools like North Alabama, Campbell, Tennessee State, etc. are around 8k - 9k students.

I think it should have more to do with butts in seats at games... If I'm putting together a conference it would be by, proximity, similarities, aspirations and fan interest. UNA, JSU, Chattanooga and Kennesaw State would have to be in the same conference. UNA-JSU historic rivals, even with a transitional, at this point weaker UNA, it draws 20k easy to the game. UNA-KSU no real history, but have a budding rivalry. Same conference and are relatively close to each other. UNA was KSUs biggest drawing game last season. Chattanooga-JSU UTC fans consider JSU to be their biggest rival. KSU-JSU had a big game in ATL, would turn into a big rivalry no problems. Chattanooga-UNA share the Tennessee River, already are trying to schedule each other as much as possible in every sport they have in common. A lot of Florence people live and work in Chattanooga and Chattanooga people live and work in Florence. Chattanooga-KSU has potential as well. Very close to each other. Dont know their history with each other in sports... I would go UNA, JSU, UTC, KSU, ETSU, WESTERN CAROLINA, AUSTIN PEAY, UTM, TTU, EKU, Murray State, Tennessee St, NCAT... Campbell, Gardner Webb, Charleston Southern, Samford, Mercer, VMI, Citadel, Wofford, Furman Any non football out of the conferences go to the ASUN. The OVC can grab Youngstown, Western Illinois, and I'm sure they can find someone else...

The OVC can grab Youngstown, Western Illinois, and I'm sure they can find someone else... That is too large, the best size for a FCS football conference is 9 max. That number gives each team 8 conference games, plus 3 out of conference games (1 money game, possible 1 or 2 more home games vs. FCS opponents).

I did - I am saying from your list I would replace Samford and Mercer (although they are a decent size and might be a good fit giving 2 GA-based teams) with some of the other, bigger and/or public schools.
