"The exterior walls of Western Carolina University’s Scott and Walker residence halls – a pair of nine-story, no-frills, 1960s-era, dormitory-style student housing facilities – are scheduled to begin tumbling down Wednesday, Sept. 16, along with floors and ceilings. Workers from cellular telephone service providers are in the process of relocating antennas located atop Scott Hall to pave the way for demolition of the buildings. The exterior demolition work will begin on the east side of Scott Hall, which is closest to Courtyard Dining Hall, and continue westward toward Walker Hall as the project progresses, said Matthew Millican, WCU facilities management engineer. “The buildings will be leveled by a mechanical process that, while not quite as impressive as an implosion or a wrecking ball, still will be a sight to see, especially for those students and alumni with fond memories of the two residence halls,” Millican said. “We’ll be utilizing a long-arm excavator, which is a type of track hoe with an extended boom that will reach out and pull down pieces of the building.” read more here: wrgc.com/demolition-of-wcus-two-largest-residence-halls-scheduled-to-begin-sept-16/ |

I may already be addicted to checking the live cam..... but, now that it’s under way, it’s officially sad to see ( as we knew it would be).

I think it is progress. What we build back will be so much more attractive and functional. I know lots of folks are sentimental about it but what we will get will be so much nicer. Just think how much better the center of campus looks now with Leatherwood and Dodson gone. 1000 percent better. Progress!!

Kinda was hoping for an implosion. That would have been a real show kinda like with the Eclipse back a few years ago.

I wonder if the reason an implosion was not used is because the building is probably full of asbestos. They have a water cannon on the front of that boom spraying water to keep the dust down. I don’t know why they are not using an implosion but thought that may be the reason.
