As of now, according to CatamountSports.com, Western is focusing on voter education and registration. The athletic website also has us taking the lead in diversity. Athletic Departments across NC and the USA are falling behind the Catamounts “cutting edge” blueprint to success. Thus, Western will take the lead once Voter Education and Hiring Diverse Candidates becomes the Standard!
“Western Carolina is among the first programs across the country – and the first in the state of North Carolina – to adopt the parameters set forth by the pledge.”

Catamount Athletics Plan Toward Progress (catamountsports.com) continued....
“We will work with local officials to educate our student-athletes on how to effect change based on understanding how decisions are made at different levels of government.”
“Our focus will be to address any gaps in our skillsets when it comes to issues of race, intolerance, and cultural humility.”
The athletic plan is clear.
1. Voter Education 2. Diversity training and hiring practices 3. Working with local government officials 4. Focus on gaps in society

Good for the athletic department. This is supposed to be a thread about getting football back to playing. Diversity has its place and I am not personally against it. As long as it does not get in the way of the primary focus of what the athletic department should be doing which is winning games. I know we will say that our mission is to provide the best experience for our student athletes and to graduate them but what kind of experience can a student athlete have if they have losing season after losing season? That is not a good experience.

What is the team doing doing during these weeks relative to football since there are no games? Are they practicing 2 or 3 days per weeks? What is their focus? Treating it like an extended Spring Practice? I hope they are not just wasting the time football-wise....
Does anyone on this board have any insight?

Not sure where to put this comment but here it goes: I’m Watching the Rabun Gap vs Christ School game Friday night on My40 TV. I keep hearing the announcers talk about all the schools each player has offers from, not one time did they say something like, Number 21 on the tackle, he has an offer from Western Carolina Univ. Does the Catamount Staff not recruit local talent? Does anyone else other than me think it’s strange that a 3 or 4 star lineman plays in Murphy and has offers from all over but does not have an offer from Western. I find that strange.

We have been doing conditioning for several weeks and we start practice for November on Oct. 7.

I think that's kind of an unfair question. I just looked at the current roster and we have kids from Waynesville, Cherokee, Murphy, Asheville, Forest City, Lincolnton and Candler. And if you spread the circle to include kids within 3 hours of Cullowhee (Charlotte, Hickory, Boone, Upstate SC, Knoxville, northeast Georgia), it likely encompasses at least 50% of the team. We recruit for the best fit for our team, which includes academic level and interest, interest in other schools, cultural fit and of course position needs - not just anyone in the area.
