David F. Couch Ballpark. I am sad every time I think that a great piece of local baseball history was tossed aside when Ernie Shore Field was re-named by Wake Forest after the facility was deeded to the school by the city of Winston-Salem some years back. Ernie Shore was one of the finest major league pitchers ever from the Winston-Salem area or from North Carolina. Born and raised on a small farm next door in Yadkin County, he has a remarkable MLB career which was cut short by service during WW1. He pitched in the major league from 1912 to 1920, minus 1918 when he was in the military. He only pitched in one game in the majors in 1912 and also missed the 1913 season when he returned to college. He pitched superbly during the 1914-1917 seasons. But he never regained his effectiveness during the 1919 and 1920 season after missing 1918 while in military service. Ernie Shore's overall MLB stats were 65 wins and 43 losses with a 2.47 ERA. And that includes an ineffective 7-10 record during the 1919 and 1920 seasons Ernie Shore was one of few major league players of his day with a college degree. He graduated with a degree in Math from Guilford College in 1913. He made MLB history on June 23, 1917 when he pitched in one of the most unusual games ever played. Babe Ruth started for the Red Sox vs. Washington and walked the first batter on 4 pitches, arguing with the home plate ump after each pitch. After ball 4, Ruth charged the plate and slugged the ump. He was ejected and had to be removed from the field by his teammates. Ernie Shore was brought in and was allowed only 5 warmup pitches. The runner on first tried to steal 2B and was thrown out. Shore retired the next 26 batters and, for years, he was credited with a perfect game. But in later years, the scoring for the game was changed (because someone had reached base) and the official record now reads "Babe Ruth and Ernie Shore combined to pitch a no-hitter". Ernest Grady Shore was my grandfather's first cousin and I remember seeing him and talking with him at family gatherings during my younger days. baseballhall.org/discover/babe-ruth-made-history-with-help-from-ernie-shore

Does anyone know why this game was canceled? No, but Wake has canceled this weekend's games and next week's mid-week, too. They mention COVID in the announcement.
