Wow....Disappointment.....Never had a chance.... This is what you get when you throw 3rd & 4th string pitchers against a Power 5 team. Obviously, Coach Mo doesn’t mind watching an ACC Team destroy the Catamounts. It is an embarrassment & humiliation to see the Cats destroyed because of weak pitching. IMO, Moranda is doing the right thing, using mid-weekers or those that are not the starters to pitch in this game. Sure we would love to beat Wake Forest but if he threw Zebby Mathews or Ryan Mitschele than they would not be available for this weekend and we need our best pitchers to win the series if not sweep ETSU. The conference games are more important than a midweek game. We have a decent RPI at 30 (as of typing this post), Wake's RPI is 65 so while losing to them may drop us a few spots, winning would only gain us a few spots, but if we lost the series to ETSU who's RPI is 160 at this point, we would drop a lot more than a few spots. We are in second in our division of the conference, but we can't lose ground and we still can catch Wofford for 1st place and possibly a 1 seed in tournament and if we can keep our RPI at 35 or below, we may still could sneak in the NCAA tournament as an at-large, should we not win the SOCON. I also have a feeling that this year because of COVID restrictions and budgets, if we can get in, we could play somewhere close to home. Likely that would mean the University of Tennessee since they are more than likely hosting and how close they are to Cullowhee. I would like to beat Wake too but all it would mean is bragging rights this year. WCU needs to prioritize what is more important which is win the division and keep the RPI as low as possible. Thus meaning we can't blow any more series to our lower RPI conference rivals.

Say what you want, but don't schedule power 5 teams if you're not going to play to win.
There are plenty of mid-major conferences we can schedule otherwise. Sure it's nice to win over those power 5 teams, but it's not going to happen throwing weak pitching to one of the best hitting teams in the NCAA.
If you're going to throw up weak pitching in the mid week games, schedule weak opponents.

What we are seeing with the WCU Pitchers in this game is they are basically Division II pitchers. RPI final ratings are just as important as Conference Wins when it Comes to the NCAA Pairings in the tournament. Does no good to win your conference and be seeded 4th in the regionals.

Western Carolina's RPI is currently #27, Wake Forest is #65. So what does a 14-3 (or worse) beatdown by Wake Forest do to the WCU's RPI? Well, it certainly will not help. www.ncaa.com/rankings/baseball/d1/rpi

If you're going to throw up weak pitching in the mid week games, schedule weak opponents. You don't know how college baseball works, it seems. When Tennessee played us last week, they didn't throw their top pitchers against us. I mean I know we have great hitting but do you think we would have scored that many runs against their weekend starter? They were saving their weekend starters to go against Vanderbilt. Often times in baseball, a mid-major school like WCU will throw their top weekend pitcher against a higher RPI P5 school who throws some obscure or freshmen pitcher and will win. That is why there are a lot of upsets in baseball and if we were struggling, WCU probably would have. But we have the opportunity to win the SoCon and if we had won against Wake but lose the series against ETSU it would have been worse, than losing to Wake and beating ETSU. Now we have work to do to make sure we don't lose the series to ETSU.

You schedule tough competition (win or lose) so that when it comes time for the tournament, the resume may be what gets you in. Beating any of these 20-0 is actually worse in RPI for us than losing to some of the quality teams like Wake, Tennessee, etc.

In reference to seeding, it really don't matter if we win our conference or win the SoCon Tournament, we will be seeded 3rd or 4th no matter what. Sometimes when a team from the SoCon or other conference that are similar to ours does well you might get 2 teams in. Such as what happened to WCU in 2007 when we dominated the regular season and conference but lost in the tournament and in that year, a really crappy Wofford team would win the SoCon. We ended up being seeded 3rd in the Chapel Hill Regional. In 2016 we were at best a mediocre team that got hot and won the tournament and was seeded a 4th seed. Both teams made noise in their respective regional, However, in 2007 it would not have mattered if we had won the tournament, we were not going to get anything better than a 3rd seed. Once in a while, a team like Coastal Carolina may while they were in the Big South or what ECU did in their CAA days but because they just straight up dominated the competition like lose no more than 10-15 games in a whole season, and they may get a 1 seed but that is rare and probably even more rare since the days of the seedings. WCU could very much be an at large bid but they hope to win the regular season and Tournament so it gives the selection committee no choice but to select them and maybe even get a good 3 seed.

Now I see how you got that grad degree at EZU.

So, tell me again how playing Wake Forest helped WCU baseball get into the NCAA? One game, the embarrassing loss to Wake Forest, dropped Western Carolina's RPI - from 27 to 39 RPI and raised Wake Forest from 65 - to 49 39 27 Western Caro. SoCon 20-10 5-6 0-0 15-4 0-0 49 65 Wake Forest ACC 13-17 7-8 0-0 6-9 0-0 So yeah, getting the crap beat out of the Cats by Wake Forest did a lot for the Cats, if you call dropping 12 points from an embarrassing loss, good. As I said, why play power 5 schools if you don't intend to play to win? www.ncaa.com/rankings/baseball/d1/rpi
