I wish we had this kind of creative thinking from our so called leadership. No one I know in the Catamount Nation thinks we have good leadership when it comes to athletics. Maybe a few with rose colored glasses but look at the results….

I spoke with Kelli It’s happening just wait I have been waiting for over 40 years. Personally I do not believe we have the alumni base or the corporate sponsorship base to raise $120 million for athletics. I hope I am wrong. If we want better / improved facilities we will have to float bonds just like App State did and UNCC did to build their stadiums. Just because you guys say it will happen is not a strategy. Why do we insist that we have to raise the funds with private donations for all things athletic when other schools with larger athletic bases and more corporate sponsorship cannot do it. It is a fools errand to think we can. You wait and remember where you heard it first. It will not happen with private funds. It is just bait and switch and you are being fooled if you think we are raising that much money privately for athletics. Your strategy is hope if you believe that. Also, I have a bridge I will sell you guys. Western has a lot of sheep as alumni who will believe anything obviously. The $ are just not out there for Western to do this privately. I bet you anything that Steve White agrees with me.

FL - Who says we are not going to use bonds and it will be totally donation funded??? We have existing bonds that are nearly paid off now, and from what I understand, bond money will be an important part of the $120M. Excited for the future!

I think we have the leadership onboard now to do big things. They have only been here a a few years and organizationally things have changed for the better. In fact, the changes have been miraculous! To take it to another level we need success on the playing field. With winning comes better fundraising and support for infrastructure changes. Maybe not to the JaxState grand scale but to a Cullowhee grand scale. ps: Jax State will eventually go FBS. ps: Remember this post a month or so ago from wcugrad95 where they found some interesting info on a job posting. catamount.boards.net/post/59041/thread"Western Carolina University is embarking on a $120 million university wide campaign in the near future of which the athletics program will be an integral part." Previously Posted From Flcatamount With the many capital improvement needs for Western Carolina, we need to tally them all up and issue state backed municipal bonds like every other public university in NC does to pay for facility improvements. Conservatively, I would say that we need around $60 to $80 million to start and we do NOT have the alumni or corporate giving base to raise that kind of cash but we can borrow the money by issuing NC backed municipal bonds and pay for it over the next 20 to 30 years. That is how UNCC paid for its football stadium and how App paid for their football stadium expansion. They did not have “big donors” step up to front them the money. Schools like Duke or Carolina can raise that kind of cash but 95 percent of regional universities issue bonds and we will eventually do that if we ever expect to have any upgraded facilities. Not going to happen if you wait for the so called big donors because we just don’t have that many of them. We have been waiting on those big donors for over 30 years. That is why there is not a capital improvement campaign for athletics and the leadership knows this.
