What happened? We used to own this sport in the SoCon. Samford has won it for 7 years straight. It's not even close now.

Danny leaving killed the program We are still second and third. That does not seem killed to me.

Danny leaving killed the program We are still second and third. That does not seem killed to me. You might have a valid point IF, WCU came in second place by 5 or 10 points. But look at the margin between WCU and Sanford, that is not a proud 2d place finish.

What happened? We used to own this sport in the SoCon. Samford has won it for 7 years straight. It's not even close now. Potential Factors On the Men’s Side Include… a) Samford Heptathlon: Bulldogs swept 1st through 6th in the multi event which accounts for 36 points unanswered. Many of these same athletes scored in other field events or aided their relay teams. Multi athletes require large coaching network and are valued financially ($cholarships). This event alone explains over half of the deficit, as we did not compete athletes in this event. b) WCU Sprints: Danny was of course known for his 400m and sprints excellence, which has lost some of its prior dominance. Western is one year into a new sprints coach in Greg Lambert who needs time to recruit and develop his own athletes. Despite, Western placed well medalling athletes in 60m, 60mH, 200m, 400m and 4x400m. c) Distance Investment: The program brought in a large distance class last fall to fix the sinking ship of cross country, and these athletes are too young to make an impact on the scoreboard as Freshmen. d) COVID Year: The same guys that Samford used to win titles last year came right back with extra NCAA eligibility. Perhaps optimistic, but it seems like the pieces are shifting into place for some titles again in the coming years.
