Senior Kate Mattison etched her name in the Western Carolina track & field record books Friday night as she set the school record in the women's 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:00.51 at Morris Williams Stadium and the Duke Invitational.
Mattison crushed her previous personal best of 17:16.05 set at the Raleigh Relays two weeks ago and eclipsed Rita Roberts' record of 17:09.64 set at the 1994 Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn. The Oconee, Ga., native finished in 11th place out of 27 competitors that started the fastest of two sections.
