Until we see a few more games, I am still grouping teams.
Top: ETSU, UTC, Mercer
Middle: Samford, Furman, WCU, VMI
Bottom: Citadel, Wofford
This week has 3 SoCon teams playing P5 opponents, so not sure how much this weekend's games will tell us, either.
That being said, I think any team in the top-2 groupings could win against any of the other SoCon teams. I will not be surprised if there are a number of teams with 2 or 3 conference losses at the end. Look for week #3 to help define some things, as Furman plays at ETSU to see if the Paladins move into the top tier. Looking at Mercer's schedule, I also expect them to be 5-1 when we play them in a month. They then play ETSU at home and at UTC the next 2 weeks. They could go 3-0 and run away with the crown or could lose any of those games. Just too early to tell.
Last season there were a number of teams at 4-1 in conference heading into the last few weeks. I fully expect that again.

I think if Western can grow up on defense and just have an average or above average defense that we can run away with the conference title. We can and will score a bunch of points on all our SoCon opponents but if we can’t stop the other teams from scoring, we will lose some. we have the best offensive scoring team in the SoCon bar none. Not even close. Our defense needs to improve and if it does improve to just average or above average, look out.
