Speedwell Cat, you seem very close to what is going on, and you seem to really be in the know, and thanks for the great information you share with us as it is always right on.
I wanted to ask you if the people going into the portal were recruited to Western by Bobby Moranda, and they might not be the caliber players that Alan Beck is looking for on his roster for 2024.
SC, you do know much more than I, and if what I am suggesting is just a speculation on my part, please let us know, because I am only speculating, but I have absolutely NO evidence to back up my input.

Football season record for 2023: I see that we could go either go 8 wins and 3 losses or 7 wins and 4 losses.
wins:out of conference: Loss out of conference/Arkansas 7 and 4 season, the fourth loss would be Furman
Charleston Southern

Both these guys were recruited by Coach Moranda. Schepel got much more mound time this season (Soph year) than he did as a FR under Moranda, but that could be expected due to development. I got the impression this year that Schepel would definitely be in Coach Beck's plans for pitching going into the next couple of years. Stictly an impression based upon the way he was used this season.
Mortland got a lot of mound time last year under Moranda. Started a majority of the mid-week games but his effectiveness was questionable. I got the impression that he was a "project" for Coach Moranda and Coach Sandefur. But he played at a JUCO in Georgia this season, so he apparently could see that Coach Beck (or Pitching Coach Beasley) did not have the same impression.
Wholesale moves from today's roster to the Transfer Portal would disturb me.
The Transfer Portal, as currently administered, disturbs me. In my opinion, it is ridiculous to see a JR who is already at his 3rd school. I saw that as I watched many Regional games last week.

Slashed .301/.479/.380 for the Catamounts last year and led the Southern Conference with seven triples.

One reason we have difficulty in recruiting DI caliber players...and retaining the good ones...is our facility. Over the past 20 years, We have steadily fallen behind SoCon schools and other schools we are competing with when it comes for baseball facilities. No on-site locker facilities...no training/conditioning facilities at the field/stadium...no indoor batting and pitching facilities...the list goes on. Bonny Moranda tried to put lipstick on our pig, but our facilities are nothing like UNC-G, Mercer, Samford, The Citadel, ETSU and definitely cannot compare to Coastal Carolina and App State. Even Gardner-Webb's are better.

He was only used as a pitcher once this season. And that was a disaster... 0.1 innings 2 hits; 5 earned runs. Walked 2 and one HBP. He was seldom used as a catcher. Played in 16 games. Only 19 AB's this season. .211 BA. 4 hits; one of them a double. Fully understandable that he is opting out... |
