Not exactly a show of force across the league on opening night Clark Atlanta (DII) beat Mercer, 71-64.

Wofford and Furman pulled away late against similar competition as Mercer. And let’s not mention poor Sammy

The SoCon opened basketball season with a 9 of the 10 teams going 5-4 in their season opening games. UNCG does not open their season until Friday when they host NC A&T. Of the five wins, all five were against non-DI competition, and in the 4 losses, one was to a non-DI team Clark Atlanta which took the win (and the money) back to Atlanta from Macon, Ga in their 71-64 victory over the home standing Mercer Bears. While the other three losses were to Division I opponents, none of the three SoCon teams were impressive in their loss, as Purdue romped over Samford 98-45, NC State ran away from The Citadel 72-59, and Richmond blew out VMI 93-75.
While the SoCon did pick up 5 expected wins over non-DI opponents, North Greenville and Brevard provided unexpected competition for their SoCon competitors. Given their preseason hype, Furman was not impressive in their 84-68 win over NG, and Brevard was competitive with Wofford, dropping a 68-85 final score to the Terriers. ETSU, Chattanooga, and Western Carolina all took care of business in their opening games as expected.
Obviously, the big disappointment for the opening game was Clark Atlanta upset of Mercer in an exhibition matchup. As a team, Clark Atlanta shot a game-high 47 percent from the floor in both halves and outrebounded Mercer 38-33. Despite a low three-point percentage in the first half, the Panthers shot 44 percent from beyond the arc in the second half.

If I was a Citadel fan, I wouldn't be disappointed with a 13 point loss to NC State. The Bellhops were down 9 at the half and only lost by four more points in the 2nd half. If we came away with a similar loss @ PNC Arena, I'd be OK with it if we played to our potential. That being said, NC State was ranked 7/8 in the ACC pre-season polls and Notre Dame 15 (last). Would be great to pull of an upset this weekend!
