Since it knocked them out of the #2 seed I would highly doubt they didn’t play to win that game

What if we had kicked a field goal today instead of turning it over on downs in the first half? We had moved the ball well the first two drives but should have put those points on the board when we stalled. Those 6 points would have VMI playing catch up instead of controlling the ball so much and provided a three point win for us. You have to put up points when you have the chance. Dumb decision by the coach.

Not sure about the first drive - constant mentions about the wind made me wonder about kicking the ball going in that direction. But we needed to get some kind of points out of at least 1 of those drives. Always lots of what ifs in every game. For WCU this year, we had a bunch of what ifs for the entire last half of the season.

What if we had a better defense? What if he had some bigger DBs and LBs? I hope this recruiting year focuses on defense as we seem to have plenty of offensive talent.

Focus on D and in depth (espcially on our offensive and defensive lines). We need to be able to run the ball all season, and we need to be able to stop people from keeping the ball away from our offense.

If “ifs” and “buts” were candies and nuts we’d all have one hell of a Christmas. 🤣😂 Great line! I haven’t heard it in a few years. “Dandy” Don Meredith apparently first used it in a conversation with Howard Cosell on an early season of Monday Night Football. (Only instead of “hell” he said “very nice.”)

You might as well said, What if we had not lost to furman? What if we had not lost to mercer? What if we had not lost to vmi? ....and what if we stopped with all the undisciplined penalties, learned how to tackle and cover pass routes on defense, or pass block on the offensive line so our QB doesn't have to run for his life.....etc. The offensive line play has been stellar for most of the season. Even during the ugly stretch they still played decently. A lot of pundants throughout the season were talking about how our line was one of the best in FCS ball and the best in the SoCon. The better question here is, what if we had been better at picking up the blitz? It's become fashionable in FB to have delayed LB blitzes and teams figured out, Furman and Mercer for sure figured out, that we don't always have the numbers to pick up the blitz well. We relied on Cole's and the skill players to recognize it early and adjust quickly. Watch the VMI game again and you'll see they exploited that with Brody. The second what if question should be, what if we had better depth at the offensive line? We could have weathered the injury bug that struck mid-season a lot better.

Kids are young. Furman played the long game, kept their guys and they are an older team and it shows on the field.
We're getting there just need to keep recruiting, have good backups and put a lot of effort on the defensive line in the off-season and special teams.

Furman has an unbelievable number of grad transfers, redshirt seniors and seniors on their roster this year. I wonder how many will be gone after this season? This was their year, they should be down next year unless they hit the transfer portal hard.

I don't expect Furman to hit the transfer portal hard - that is not the kind of program they have (not saying that is good or bad). Their young backup QB got some valuable experience, and they have some younger skill players that I am sure will be good. Replacing Huff and Roberto will be tough, but I would expect them to have a physical team and to plug holes with some strategic grad students again.
UTC has several really good players coming back - their QB, that really good WR who killed us, etc. are all underclassmen. Mercer tends to have a bunch of solid players every year, but their QB and RB will be back (they do lose those 2 really good WRs). Samford loses a bunch of guys.
In terms of returning starters, WCU should be in excellent shape and returning as much or more productivity than anybody in the league. But those other top teams in the conference will not have empty cupboards. Our schedule is tougher, so we will have to be better next year to find ourselves anywhere close to the top of the SOCON.
