They also probably look at injures and wager the odds of a competitive game. If Gonzalez is really cooked for the year. There's no way we could play competitiveley. I noticed UTC’s qb didn’t play yesterday That is probably because the fix by the Chatt AD was already in and Chatt held him out so he would not get hurt. Chatt new they were in before they even played Alabama so they could make the decision to hold him out.

That was very hard to watch even though we knew the outcome of the selection show. I get where everyone is say chatty shouldn’t be ahead of us in the selection but they are ahead of us in the standings. I get that we beat them and a lot of other things happened. As it has been beat to a pulp, we did not handle business yesterday, and I hope that is the only thing that cost us. I did think it was interesting that we were not even the first four out, so either yesterday really really hurt us or we were never getting a playoff berth at all. Just my thoughts.

Well, as I was reminded, Randy was also on the committee the year we thought we were going to the playoffs last and we still did not get in. At first today I thought something was shady, but in the end his vote probably doesn’t make any difference in the grand scheme of things.

The committee is made up of people and you know behind the scene lobbying is done. Randy being on the committee would be useless. He was a terrible AD as everyone knows. He made one bad decision after another. He would not have been able to lobby effectively for us or any other school. The Chatt AD knew that we beat them and that a Chatt beat VMI by a very slim margin. It does not matter now, but I am not gullible enough to believe this was all on the up and up and home cooking was not involved. It’s over now and there is nothing any of us can do.

Let's be honest, us losing to VMI knocked us out of the playoffs and bumped UTC up into the playoffs. Prior to that, they were viewed as the first in line that was outside looking in by everyone. It's just that simple.
Now what about Mercer getting sent out west? If we had made it in, that's the slot we would have been in most likely. That means playing SDSU in SD which might be just a slightly less challenge than playing NDSU in ND. Speaking of, throughout the season there's been some chatter about their lack of draw with fans this season. Sounds like they have A LOT of fair weather fans and they play indoors!

After some time to reflect on this past weekend, I am glad we didn't get selected for the playoffs. Not because I think we were undeserving, or there was committee biases, but because of our current team health.
When at full health this season, we could have played with and competed/beaten the majority of the FCS teams. But as the season began to wear on us, like a lot of teams, injuries to key positions began to become more and more apparent.
Losing Dez for Furman and Mercer knocked us off track. Key losses on the O-line began to expose us offensively, making us a pass first team. Then once we finally adjusted and started getting healthy again (ETSU game) we lose Cole at the start of the VMI game (along with Coulter on the O-line again).
These are not excuses for not winning, only the reason I am relieved we missed the playoffs. Had we been included, we would not have seen the Catamount team that early in the season, was capable of making a semi-finals run.
While I'm as bummed as anyone, I'm also excited for what should be an excellent 2024 team. I hope for the players who are returning, that the 2023 letdown is fuel for them to use to get better in 2024. For the seniors/grad students, I'm disappointed for them, but thankful for all their sacrifices.
The worst part is the 2024 season is still 9 months away!
Go Cats!

It exposed a weakness, a lack of really talented, experienced depth which honestly, isn't unexpected given it's only year 3 with Coach Bell.

On avg how long does it take a good coach to build a solid front to back team with good depth not just starters?

With the transfer portal, things have changed. But generally speaking, you expect to see big divdends in the make-up of a team and in the culture in year 3 of a new coach coming in. Not to say some haven't had immediate success, or that in other situations it takes longer where a guy comes in and has to totally switch schemes and the type of player on the roster (for example, a school moving from the Triple Option to the spread).
I think we have seen that - out roster and our expectations are vastly different now under Coach Bell. We are a few pieces and some injuries away from being a perennial top-20 type of team. So I would say we are on track even though we all wanted it to happen this year. Next year is Bell's 4th season, meaning the entire squad should be the players he wanted on the roster.
