Graduate student kicker finished career with 300 career points, second in program history Richard McCollum was today named one of the 10 national finalists for the 2023 Fred Mitchell Award which is given annually to the top placekicker in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, and NJCAA levels for excellence both on the field and in the community. A finalist in both 2021 and 2023, McCollum is WCU's first repeat national finalist for the special teams award which has been handed out since 2009. The organization began naming its top 10 finalists in 2015. McCollum is one of two Catamount kickers to have been among the final vote since the organization, joining Blake Bostic who was on the final watch list in 2010. Placekickers from across the country were nominated by their respective school's sports information or media relations offices based on their on-field performance and participation in their community. The 2023 Fred Mitchell Award winner will be announced publicly on Friday (Dec. 8) on the Mully and Haugh Show (5:30 - 10 a.m.) with hosts Mike Mulligan and David Haugh on 670 The Score out of Chicago and through the show's podcast.
