Something no one is talking about and is a consideration for every coach with every sport at WCU, how does their family like Cullowhee? Sure, we could possibly come up with a contract to match an offer by many schools but does Coach Gray's wife like it here? As a longtime resident of the area, it's interesting to see a bit of a switch. It seems to have become *somewhat* easier to recruit athletes to Western, but more difficult to recruit faculty/staff/coaches. The real estate situation is a train wreck. Many (including Alex Gary) commute from Haywood and Buncombe counties. The adult social situation has improved a little, but adequate shopping and similar amenities remain a problem. It's truly a challenge. The university recently joined a considerable real estate development project near campus which a sign both of the problem and some progressive thinking in addressing it.

I would hate to see him leave, but with a lot of WCU's top talent leaving/graduating after this season, if I were Coach Gray, I'd have to seriously consider my options. It sounds like Coastal Carolina is much more committed and probably willing to put money into their staff than is WCU.

From 11-21, to 18-16, to 22-9 (to date) is pretty impressive improvement and has to look good on a resume.
If it's true that his wife isn't happy here, that has to be a big factor in his decision.

I just hope the school requires the next coach to buy a house in Western NC and live in the area. We need our coaches to be 100 percent bought in. I know that Larry Hunter never moved to Cullowhee and maintained a residence in Raleigh. We should not have that. We should have folks committed to Western. Living in the area and being part of the community should be required. If a coach does not move to the job, that means they are not committed. Coach Bell did it the right way. He settled at Bear Lake. He is committed. Something is wrong if you work at WCU and you don’t like rural life. We don’t need you if you or your family does not love the area. I just hope he stays. Coastal Carolina is a lateral at best. I don’t care how much money they have or what they pay. We need to be asking Coach Gray what he wants in a contract extension and ask him to sign now or it is off the table.

There aren't many places to live, unless buying in a gated community is your speed, and very few people on campus have that kind of coin. Maybe just Kerwin in fact.
