He put Davidson on the National Basketball Map in the 60s. He first couple of years at Davidson, he would drive his family station wagon on recruiting trips, sleep on a mattress in the back and clean up/shave in filling station bathrooms. Great and very colorful coach.

When Lefty got the job at Maryland (moving up from Davidson), he announced that his objective was to make Maryland "the UCLA of the East".
After he began to win at Maryland, he revised that. He said he wanted UCLA to become known as "the Maryland of the West."
I attended all the games of the 1971 ACC basketball tournament in Greensboro. There was one guy who sat about 5 rows up from courtside who held up a single sign every minute of every game. The sign read, "LEFTY IN '72"
Lefty had recruited a blockbuster Freshman Class and they would be eligible to play varsity ball next year.
