I would think that Western is going to increase Coach Grays salary and add at least 5 years to his contract. He is 3 years in and deserves an increase and an extension. I would like to see Western make him one of the top 3 highest paid coaches in the league and give him a 5 to 8 year extension. I doubt he leaves for another mid-major job as he has more to accomplish at Western and he is ultimately a P5 type coach. He is a pro and a winner and we need to take care of him. I have confidence that our leadership is on top of this.

Even just in this season, there is a huge difference in play from our first game to now. Even with the big early wins and slow middle, I feel the improved and grew so much!

I hope we don't lose him, but from a purely business standpoint, I'd like to see how next season goes before any contract extension. He has 2 years left on his contract. On top of his $250k salary this season, he's already earned an extra $5k for reaching 20 wins in the regular season. He can earn another $20k by winning the SoCon tournament...and more if he wins games in the NCAA tournament.
One quote from when he was hired: "Western Carolina is ready for another run like 1996. That’s the ultimate goal, to compete for championships and help build young men with character while doing so." I'm hoping for a SoCon tournament championship this year!

Next year will not be as great but I would like him to be here next year. We need to show him how much we value him being our coach. What is going to happen if we wait a year? Historically Western has given questionable at best extensions bordering on stupidity when coaches were at their low point leaving everyone laughing at and making fun of how we have treated our coaches. I don’t think we should tie winning the conference to an extension. For once, I would like to see Western not do the wrong thing when it comes to extensions and retaining good coaches. The smart thing to do is to show Coach Gray some love. He has done enough to prove himself. I have do doubt though that if a good thing can be messed up, Western will mismanage this and be the laughingstock once again of college sports. Anyone who has been a casual fan for many years knows what I am saying is true. Cmon Western, do the right thing once. I am pulling for you!

We have not given Bell an extension yet either correct? Good point. We should give him one too and a raise.

You watch. Western will play games and not try to lock our coaches in and fool around and lose them both and end up spending more money than they would have in the long run trying to save a nickel. Look at the Speir debacle. He deserved to be fired and our BOT ended up voting unanimously to extend his contract for 5 years. So we end up having to fire him the next year and paying him a million dollars for four years not to coach. in the meantime, we have to pay a new coach. I say split that million dollars between Bell and Gray and give then both a raise. I think we have one more year to pay Speir. Problem solved. We will somehow eventually lose them both though. It is what we do at Western.

They are producing results and we need to keep them as long as we can so that if/when they do leave there will be a solid foundation for the next coaches. Having said that it, would not surprise me a bit to see our BOT screw it up.
