Everyone is always saying our athletic fees are too large. JMU and the other top 10 schools on this list have it right. Every school on this list are perceived to be above Western academically and I would say that is in a big way because of their sports teams being perceived better. We need to step up our student fees big time. Ours are much too low. We need to be up around $2500 a year. Again, this proves that athletics is not a priority at Western Carolina and our past administrations do not get it. Look how well JMU has done in athletics. That could easily be us. It’s called leadership. Anyone who does not get this is not a leader. www.sportico.com/leagues/college-sports/2024/james-madison-student-fees-athletics-million-1234771980/

As of 2022, JMU also had 22,760 paying students as of fall 2023... You also know as well as I do that the amount of increases and limits for student fees in NC are set by the UNC system for all the state universities.

I do know that about the student fees but I was trying to get folks stirred up. I also think we ought to be able to charge whatever we please within limits.

We received an increase in student fees two years ago. That’s the only way we were able to start conversations on the new facilities. WCU hadn’t had an increase in student fees in around 10 years. Much needed with or without the new facilities. Props to our Chancellor for prioritizing and pushing them through! She’s done more the people realize for Athletics.

I agree with that but it is becoming too little too late. When do we see bulldozers?

I was always told we would break ground this Summer/Fall. I heard they were having trouble landing a contractor and supply cost kept pushing things a bit.
I believe they have to have 50% of cash in the door to start making actual movement. The Chancellor is going to lend it to Athletics but they have to get a few more gifts pledged to hit their quota. Student enrollment being down has held up the process a bit too.
It will happen because money has already been taken and designated, plus this was the foundation for the fee increase. So sooner or later it will actually happen.

I will say our previous AD talked a big talk about facilities but we never saw money come in the door. It was all talk and little to no action. This go around there is money on the table and a Chancellor who will see it through.
